469 miles..........wow...not a good way to start your day.............

I know that it's all driven by deceleration rates and such, but that is an awful amount of front end damage for no air bag deployment. Maybe somebody hit it while it was parked?

Automatic 5.0 11/5/14 10:09 AM

I also noticed no air bag deployment and found it odd.

That's a wierd impact.

Notice how the bumper reinforcement is concave dead center as if the vehicle impacted a tree or a pole. But the hood doesn't have similar concave damage, nor does it appear that the upper radiator support is sucked in either.

I'm taking an educated guess that the car impacted a low profile object such as a fire hydrant.

And I agree...based on the primary impact to the center of the bumper, the air bags should have deployed.

UPS did that.

David Young 11/5/14 12:11 PM

I would have thought the air bags would have gone off too :)

The concave damage might of been from a toe hitch off another vehicle. They've been known for ripping through the radiator and bumpers and crushing the engine, had it happen...

The delivery folks left it on a hill not in gear and no brake on and it rolled into something at the bottom of the hill?

But a toe hitch wouldn't have caused such a large and deep concave impact as suggested by the damage to the bumper reinforcement. Because the Mustang is so low, and most hitches are attached to 4X4's which sit taller, the impact would have been much higher, probably right through the grille.

I also don't see any direct impact damage to the fenders and hood as might be expected in a rear ender with another vehicle.

Unless the engine sustained damage, I don't see why it's totaled. But it's a V6, and if it's a rental unit, then the rental company makes the call since they're usually self insured. They don't put cars with these types of impacts back into fleet.

That's true but there are extended drop hitches used for smaller trailers for regular sized trucks, where I live most the people have low drop hitches that are maybe 1 1/5th feet off the ground and maybe 2 feet long. Could of been backed into while parked and the driver of the other vehicle stopped once they felt their vehicle jerk and got scared and drove off. Or yes could of hit say a fire hydrant but if it hit a reinforced forge steal hydrant bolted to a base concreted into the ground I am sure there would be similar damage, those things just don't move as people think. So yea it would cause the damage shown but there's really know way to know unfortunately. I am sure the owner is pissed tho, brand new car already in the junk yard.. Pity

True, I'm in FL as well, saw a woman drinking coffee and applying lip stick today in traffic... Nah it's okay don't concentrate on driving its okay the person you hit most likely will be concentrating and be unlucky being hit by you.. Ehh

+1 for the fire hydrant/short concrete pole theory. What a bummer.
