I don't see any way a smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient Mustang can be a bad thing unless that meant:
A.) The 5.0 is going away
and/or
B.) The smaller size somehow dictates that the car be hideously ugly.

Note A and B in my post. Really, what else is there? Lighter and smaller can only mean increased performance as long as the 5.0 remains available in the 400HP range.
Maybe I'm just being cocky but while "Mustang III" is a questionable choice in naming the project (assuming that's even factual), I think it's silly to seriously consider that a repeat of the Mustang II might happen.

I have always believed that the 1994 Mustang was the first "retro/modern interpretation" of the Mustang. To be honest, it has completely obvious styling cues from the original formula. That being said, maybe there is some hope for the new design.
Which I think was a pretty good starting point....

Yes! that was the point of the 94 and the 99 was the next step in the return to Mustang evolution. both where inspired by the original coupe where the 05 was more Fast back inspired. We have been on a return to the DNA and evolution since 94. we all seem to forget that the 94 save the Mustang NOT 05.

I love the 1970 styles in the front fascia. To me the drawing shows what the SN95 should have evolved into while the S197 keeps the old school looks. While Ford may not be building prototypes, the GT90, GT, Cobra, and some of the Shelby prototypes are all mish moshed in my head as to what I want to see.
As far as the head lights, I will see. I don't want to ruin what's good. I think HID's are the future, just not necessarily how they are now. Saw a 2010 GT with HID's one night down town and I had to do a triple take to make sure it wasn't a BMW or Mercedes, yeah, it looks that solid.
I have grown a lot of interest in the future Mustangs because one of two things will happen since the wife and I went over the next 5 year plan last night. 1) I will end up buying the future gen Mustang instead of the current S197. 2) I will still be somewhat broke so a 2011 is going to be on my radar well into 2015. Unless miracles happen.

You missed the point. The 94 was the first Mustang to come out of TEAM Mustang. Yes the 05 boosted sale, It had to, it was the next step in getting back to evolutionary design. If the 94 had not been done the 05 would have never happened. the Mustang was scheduled to discontinuation and 94 was a new beginning.

Argueably, the S197 is the hottest looking modern Mustang ever; not forgetting ofcourse the Shelby as well. But with Ford going with a global design platform, I hope that the 2014 Mustang maintains its Amercan Muscle DNA without giving into a generic Euro look. Time will tell.

I, even as a former '94 Probe owner, agree too. While the '93+ Probe, at least in GT trim, was a fantastic car and deserved every one of the various accolades it won. It had sharp handling, a creamy/revvy/snarling (with a Borla) little V6 that gave it quick performance, cat-nimble handling and surprising utility all baked into one very affordable package. As good as it was in its own right, however, it wasn't a Mustang and it was foolish to even have considered passing it off as one.
The only shame is that Ford doesn't have a credible Probe successor today. It's immediate successor, the Mercury Cougar, had potential as indicated in various concept cars, but ended up a rather bland Secretary's car that simple withered away by dint of neglect (pretty much the story of Mercury as a whole really). Maybe a hinted at neo-Capri based on the new Focus platform with some 300hp+ turbo motor...now that would make for a distinct stable-mate, though never a replacement, for the Mustang.
