"Rough" Idle
So I've noticed that my '13 has a pretty rough idle. I'm told by the dealership this is "normal". It's the kind of thing I'd expect out of a 60's V8, but I'd expect a smooth idle with variable/multi-cam engines.
It's smooth all other times, just at idle it fluctuates between smooth and kinda "rumbly" (enough to cause significant vibration in the shifter knob). Not enough that you feel like the engine is going to die, but not what I'd expect out of a modern engine. Is this "normal"? |
Unfortunately, yes--it's normal. The first time mine did it I thought there was something wrong with it, but there are tons of threads showing other 5.0s doing it too. You can actually watch the tach jump around a little. You'd think Ford could do better than that. My big diesel truck with 100k miles idles 100 times smoother than my brand new GT.

My 2013 3.7L does it to.. Not a lot but I do feel it in the shifter when cold. I don't notice when the car is warm..
|
Want smooth? Buy a caddy... want fun buy a stang
|
Maybe they engineered it like that? So that it feels like a muscle car and not a chevy sonic
|
It's kind of like my dad's old 74 Firebird. That's what I thought of first when I noticed it.
|
Call me crazy but I kind of like the somewhat lumpy idle. It really does make me feel like I am driving an American muscle car.
|
Meh, it's not a huge issue, but it is unexpected in a modern engine, muscle car or not. Wanted to make sure it wasn't abnormal.

I don't think it was on purpose. It's not a rhythmic lumpy idle like an old school v8 with a hot cam. It's a random, annoying stumble. It's not a deal breaker, but let's be honest with ourselves... A rough idle pretty rare in modern engines no matter how weak or powerful, and if Ford really wanted to, I'm sure they could fix it.

My name is Deysha with Ford Service. I recommend you have your dealer take a look at it and make sure there is nothing else going on. Make an appointment with them and PM me with VIN, dealer, mileage, and contact info so I can escalate it to the Customer Service Manager of your area if needed. Deysha |
It's hard to get a sense of how rough the idle is your describing through text. Getting it checked out at a dealership isn't a bad idea either. I would take full advantage to having a Ford customer service rep on the forum!
Thanks for looking our for these guys & gals Deysha! Shane |

I am having the same symptom... I hear a click too when it drops RPM... I never had this in my 01 GT 5SPD or 97 Auto... Both were tuned.
This brand new GT 5.0 6spd with AIR RAID Intake from ford installed has a weird idle where RPM is jumping... just a slight... It is a cold rainy day out here IN PHOENIX. Another thing is, when i was pressing the gas pedal... in neutral i try to get 1000-2000-3000 rpm constant but regretfully it either goes down or jumps up a little.... I noticed it when i was driving that it was doing this... |

Gas mileage improved as soon as I did the oil change as well. |
my idle is only rough for the first minute of a cold start, then there are now issues at all.
