Rocker panel chalking

Guess this is one of the reasons they’re gonna start painting the rocker panels again.

Warm out yesterday so washed my car, it’s not even 3 yrs old yet and the whole the bottom trim is turning white.

It started showing this summer but this is the worst it’s been. Tried back to black and that worked for about three days, the plastic itself is turning white. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Look up a product called "Forever Black". It worked good on my 12 year old Cherokee side moldings.

^^^^^he said that lasted only 3 days......

Did you use any wax on them ! Just curious......
If you cannot bring back the black in them, i say unbolt them and bring them to a paint shop. Shouldn't be to expensive.
Or
Get a can of DupliColor " trim black " and do it yourself. No biggie.....

never got any wax on them, was always careful, black trim doesn't usually react well to wax.
if i was keeping it i'ld paint them with SEM trim paint, used it on my 88 & 93 trim, works very well, but not gonna go through the trouble.

the back2black is more like thick armor-all, was looking for something that maybe had dye in it that would stain them..

Yikes...we need a solution.
Is this going to happen to the whole front grille, fascia, etc?

What have you used to take off the Tar? I believe that to be the problem.
It's not a problem thats specific to the mustang. any vehicle with the plastic trim along rocker panel is subject to being discolored from some chemicals used to remove road tar and such. not much you can do at this point but keep it dressed with one of the above mentioned products.

only thing i've ever used was mild auto soap, never anything but back2blk, but that was after they started to fade

get bumper paint from SEM. I've used it to change the color of my lower rockers on my truck and used it on my mustang to make it a gloss black. it's especially made for bumpers and rockers. even if you're not keeping it, you should do it right.

Griot's Garage Solutions

I'm sure hoping we can prevent it with regular care. So far, I've used Meguiar's Ultimate Protectant, but that stuff probably needs to be applied once a week or at least every other week to stay nice & black on my daily driver.

If it doesn't hold up well over the winter, I will likely try the Griot's Garage solution in the spring:
It's definitely the highest-maintenance part of our cars' exteriors, much more so than the paint, unfortunately.

As stated above get a good reconditioned and protectant. There are some much better brands out there then the crap that you can get over the counter.

For the guys that wanna prevent this, get a good layer of actual Protectant on there, not just a "look good" product.

I HIGHLY recommend 303 Aerospace protectant for plastic trim. It has SPF 40 in it to block damaging rays.

Check some detailing sites for tons of choices, The BlackFire line is great too.
