Ok, well I was under the car and realized the that the Left side (drivers side) of my rear axle was pretty soaked with fluid. The wetness goes from the pumpkin to the sway bar bracket with most of the fluid build up on the bottom of the axle. It seems it could be coming from the little nipple on the top of the axle. The nipple seems loose and wobbly when touched. Anyone know what this could possible be and why/what caused it???? The car is basically brand new. It has 2300 miles on it and has been driven in nice weather only and babied 95% of the time.
Here are some pictures. It looks wetter on the bottom in person. |
That little nipple is fine, its the vent for the axle. Now as to why you have that much fluid, i dont know. Did you just go on a long drive? Over an hour? Might have built up pressure and it puked out the vent...

Take it to a dealer it's still under warranty or at least should be. It's a vent but it shouldn't leak like that. Dealer can tell you if something is wrong with it and obviously fix it under warranty.

Take a look at Ford's Technical Service Bulletins:
TSB 12-2-1 Rear Drive Axle Vent -- Oil Leak -- Built on or before 01/23/2012 |
How do I check out that TSB? Google?

Boom! You guys are the best. So at least I know its somewhat normal and not actually leaking per se and she's driveable.
And yes I did go on a long drive recently with accelerating heavily once or twice. |

Deysha/FCS,
Anyway you guys can up this to my dealer? Im about to take it in for my complimentary oil change and I'd like to get this taken care of. I also seem to be getting a metal on metal sound from the rear (as if the brake pads are constantly rubbing the rotors. Sound goes away when stopped. Andddd lastly when braking lightly, I get a very loud chirping/squeaking from what seems to be the Drivers side rear when applying brakes lightly. goes away under hard braking. Thanks! Phew that was alot. |

Looking at those pics of a rusty axle makes me happy I painted mine when I took her home.

The left side of my rear axle was leaking as well. The dealership I brought it to ordered the vent and repaired it in a day. Apparently it's not a big deal and it's a known issue with vehicles that fall under a certain production date, that is what I was told. When I asked if I could take my car for the night they insisted it not be driven.

I made a video that shows how to change the vent valve for those who need it-
