Faint-ticking-noise-from engine 2014

Faint ticking noise from engine 2014 3.7L v6
This is not very noticeable, but when the hood is up and engine idling you can hear a faint ticking sound. The mechanic at the ford dealership said this was the ti vct and not to worry. That there will be a slight noise and if it worsens to come back and have it checked over again. What do you guys think and have you had any problems with this? I have true researching tho topic and am finding mixed reviews on it is normal and that it is a problem. I noticed it when I installed the cold air intake. Other than that can't even hear the engine when hood is down. Call me paranoid just need some clarification about this engine or is it something to worry about.

Not sure about the 3.7 but it seems like a lot of the 5.0s tick for one reason or another.

The noise you are hearing is completely normal, so many things that make a "slight" ticking noise in the 3.7 engine bay.

Stop worrying about it and enjoy your car.

My '12 5.0 has a slight ticking noise at idle. Always has, no big deal. Has never given me troubles.

We need to make a sticky with FAQs for this. The ticking you hear on ALL 5.0s is the Ti-VCT system. Its perfectly normal, just like the whine of a super charger.

The OP's car is a V6, and they make more ticking noises than a 5.0 because they have no hydraulic followers like a 5.0, basically they have a solid lifter type of cams, with direct acting metal bucket followers.

Anyway, a "slight" ticking noise is absolutely nothing to worry about, on either engine...

Mine does the same thing, nearly 13,000 miles on it, seven months of ownership, brand new when I took delivery, has done this since day one. Previously I worried a bit, and now? Not worried, just normal for this engine.

The 3.7 is direct injection correct? Would stand to reason the fuel Injectors would be much louder on a set up like that as well... Have no experience with the 3.7 but all the direct injection cars I have worked around always tick at idle...

Sweet that makes me feel better.

No - it is not DI.

The strategy--instead optimizing the new Ti-VCT system and emphasizing breathing--paid off. The proof is in the pudding--the new Ford Duratec 3.7-liter V-6 (pictured) produces 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, while GM's 3.6-liter direct injection V-6 makes 280 to 304 horsepower and 266 to 273 pound-feet of torque, depending on the application.

Right. I think many of the comments lately is because of some people being new to OHC engines. I love the clickity clack of an OHC over an OHV pushrod any day!

Hi guys,

If this engine noise becomes a concern, please don’t hesitate to bring it in to your dealers and PM me.

Jason, welcome to the forum. I'll add my "that's normal" to the pile. I owned a 3.7L F-150 for two years and 18,000 trouble free miles, and the injectors made the ticking sound also. Enjoy, it's a tough little engine that loves to rev.
