Retrofitting Recaro Seats to my 2013 GT Comfort Package
2 Attachment(s)
UPDATE: Boss seats and leather GT skins acquired. Awaiting shipment and then it's time for the power track/lumbar/heater conversion.
Attachment 168766Attachment 168767 Original Post: I've got a 2013 GT with the comfort package, so I have the heated regular seats. Because I am so tall, these seats aren't the most comfortable on long trips, due to the hump in the seat that hits me in the back. It's starting to bother me more and more. I'm trying to find some leather Recaro seats with the straight backs, to do a switcheroo with, but having a hard time. ebay, craigslist, and Mustang forum searches have been completely fruitless. Anyone know how to get ahold of a pair of these, or are they just as rare as I'm experiencing? Any recommendations on where else I can look? I'd even do a trade for my dual power leather ones plus cash. Hopeful I can get this done before spring/summer, I've got quite a few longer trips to take this year. Any help would be appreciated! |
I have the leather recaros and have on occasion tried to find them for sale just to see what they would have cost after the fact. I don't think you will have a lot of luck finding the Leather ones. Ironically the 2015 recaro leather seats are readily available on eBay.

If they do that's the way I would go. If not you can get the ford racing cloth version and buy a set of take off leather covers from eBay. Would be almost $3000 for the seats and another $500-600 for the leather covers. Either way its an expensive proposition. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Racing-M-63660005-MC-Mustang-Recaro-Seats-/221679707418?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &hash=item339d23e51a&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/2011-2012-MUSTANG-GT-RECARO-OEM-CLOTH-SEAT-COVERS-SVT-SHELBY-BOSS-FACTORY-/221183248849?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &hash=item337f8c89d1&vxp=mtr |
I've seen the Ford Racing ones, but I haven't been able to find the leather covers. I just want to have a matching interior. I guess I could look for a BOSS back seat to match the FR ones, but again seems like a bit of a difficult find.
|
They're extremely difficult to find and quite expensive when you do find them (much like the spoilers for 03-04 Cobras)
|
Buy the Ford racing Recaro's and then buy the Leather Recaro Take offs.
I like the 2015 GT seats better. |
FINDING the leather Recaro takeoffs is the problem! I haven't seen any leather ones except the GT500s in a while.
The 2015 Recaro covers and seats look very similar... I'm tempted to buy them and try to retrofit them to my current power rails. Then just switch them back when I pull the trigger on a S550 down the line. Shame they didn't do even a heated Recaro seat in any of these cars. |
Interestingly, I want to swap my passenger Recaro with a Comfort Package seat. My fiancee is 5'0" and can't see out of the car very well and I want a seat for her that is softer and can be raised.
|
Will these work?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2014-SHELBY-MUSTANG-GT500-TAKE-OFF-SEAT-COVERS-SLIPS-NON-RECARO-/271769834041?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f46be9239&vxp=mtr These are Leather recaro for a 2015 will they work in our 2014's? http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-RACING-LOGO-2015-MUSTANG-RECARO-FRONT-SEAT-PAIR-M-63660005-MD-/371252060262?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item567058e066&vxp=mtr |
The GT500 covers are non Recaro. The 2015 seats look like the same seat and cover, but I would assume the tracks are different. I'd love to buy them and give it a shot at getting them on my 2013 rails, but if they don't work then that's a $3000 mistake!
|
Anyone trading their 2013-2014 Mustang w/ Recaros for a 2015? PM me! I'll come to you and swap seats plus cash before you trade in! Looking for a Spring road trip excuse.

Sorry about that I thought I had the recaro ones. They are posted allot on ebay. Just not when you need them. I love the 2015 ones. Is there anyone on this forum that would know if they would fit? |
Just looked into this a little more. From what I've gathered, the seat itself is the same (with a different leather cover) but the seat track is different from the 2014's. I'm not sure if the airbag connectors would fit plug and play. If the airbag plug ins are the same... THEORETICALLY you could buy the 2015 seats and swap to the seat tracks in your 13 or 14, and you're good to go.
|
Ill tell you if they fit and the connectors will work the bag correctly I am in. The 2015 seats are better than the 2014.

Here ya go!!

Thanks imeyers302! I won the auction last night, now I'm putting the final touches on scoring some boss seats for the swap. Will update with pictures and process as things come along.

I sure hope so! I'm a little worried about the fit on these things since I'm so tall, but we'll give them a shot. Worst case I can sell them after the conversion. I bought the boss seats today for the swap (pics in first post), so now it's just a matter of waiting for everything to come in. I plan to add the dual power tracks, lumbar, and heaters to the Recaro's, and then finish them off in the new leather skins to match the back seat. Can't wait!

Any progress on the seat swap? Im looking into swapping my leather seats out of my 13 for the 15 seats and am curious if you ran into trouble on the seat tracks and connectors.

2015 base seats are fantastic. But the 2015 recaro's are even better than the 2014.
I would take either. For every day I would love to know if the 2015 would fit my 2014. |

I'm in the process of installing the 2015 Recaro ford racing seats in my 05 mustang Gt. So far they physically fit in place and the back mounting bolts are the same as the 05 to 14. the front mount bolts are installed vertically instead of horizontally, but if I take the 90 deg bracket off the old seats they can be made to fit. Ill post more once I get them bolted in and get the seatbelt and passenger airbag sensors working.

Interesting that the 2015 FR Recaros are leather. I love that they have the seatbelt guide! I'm going to look into retrofitting those onto mine.

rear seat track was very easy to modify to fit just had to remove the factory studs. Next step is to make the front seat track mounting brackets.

Made a little progress today.

Ended up using the OEM brackets off the old seats. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...c5c78633f1.jpg Had to cut 1 1/8 off the front tracks. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...1591a2f843.jpg Finished Product. |
|
nice. how did you avoid the passenger airbag sensor issue? did you move the sensor over to the recaros?
|
I used the new FR bladder and removed the FR sensor and connected the old OEM sensor to bladder tube and clamped it. So I was able to keep the stock wiring harness. The wiring was pretty straight forward.

The mounts after I trimmed them and used a very big hammer. LOL https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...a1e71b7802.jpg I drilled out the rivets here https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...1e951511a1.jpg Bottom view of mounts https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...c76a856b49.jpg Mid way through the drilling process https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...2e1eed61c1.jpg left mount I only had to trim the side. I didn't trim any metal off the top. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...c86da3fb6d.jpg Right side I used the Left to mark and trim the Right https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...c2a74d16be.jpg Mid way through the drilling process |

Holy cow, quite the work you had to do to get this to work!
You sir are not just a retrofitter (welcome to the club), but a master craftsman! Wish I could be a part of your club ... |

Passenger side New FR bladder and Tube connected to OEM sensor and wiring. There is fluid in this bladder so when you swap out the sensor hold the tube up so the fluid doesn't run out and quickly insert sensor in tube and clamp. I used the OEM wire harness and the airbag and seatbelts work fine. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...b486a06feb.jpg Passenger side OEM elect plug soldered to new FR seatbelt Note...New seatbelt has 5 wires where OEM has 2 I used a meter and found continuity between these two wires...these are the ones I used https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...0252a8ca4a.jpg OEM elect plug drivers side. The green and black wires power the lumbar and power seats. I cut these since the new seats are not power. they are the green and black wires on the left and right. you want the three wire in the center for the seatbelt and track sensor. the yellow plug is not used on my 2005. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...71493341df.jpg Drivers side seat belt and track sensor wiring https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...0830baba91.jpg Finnished product |
One more note these seats sit approximately 2.5 inches higher than stock. I'm 6.2 and I have about 3 inches from the top of my head to the headliner. Very comfortable!
|
Nice Job. Seats look Great.
All functions work? Great Write up. |
Yes, both Seatbelt sensors, drivers track sensor and Passenger Airbag sensor work. These FR seats are not powered and do not come with seat heaters, coolers, or lumbar support.

quick clarification: so when your stock seats were lowered all the way to the bottom and same for these FR seats, these new FR seats have you sitting 2.5" higher in the car? I find the stock seats terribly uncomfortable. This write up shows this is a great way to go... except i'm 6'4" and I have my seat lowered all the way. 2.5" higher up sounds like a lot. I hate that feeling of my head rubbing the headliner and looking out the top of the windshield |
Great! At least now I know I can bolt 2016 front seats into a S197 without welding! I have also seen a write up on putting the back seats in too. Have you found any write ups on wiring the power functions and heated and cooled for the 2015 in the s197? Thanks

Are your side airbags hooked up
