Pioneer v Kenwood
Last year I started reading threads about using certain Kenwood head units with the idatalink Maestro and dash install kit. I really liked that this would give you a more modern touch screen interface in the vehicle and seems to allow for a lot of functionality with being able to program buttons for single press or press and hold features. I also like that some of the Kenwood head units allow you to connect an Android phone to an HDMI/MHL connection and see your phone screen on the larger display. I figured this would allow me to use Google maps from the phone for navigation but see it on the head unit. No need to buy a Kenwood with built in nav. Probably my favorite thing I've seen on these Kenwood's is the gauges.
So now I see that some Pioneer head units are compatible with the idatalink Maestro but I'm trying to figure out to what extent. I also see that at least one new unit I looked at an HDMI in put but I didn't see if it was MHL compatible. I see Pioneer's AppRadio One might be useful for some of that by connecting with their cable. Then some units have AppRadio Mode which has direct app access wirelessly it seems. You can even use Dash Command to get some of the guages and other information. Although having it native on the head unit would be better. The most important features I'd want would be to play my music (can be done by retaining Sync so that's fine I presume). Calls (sync again), texts (sync), using smart phone nav on the radio screen (HDMI/MHL) and the gauges (plus tire pressue and things like that). So are the gauges and tire pressure monitoring a feature foo the idatalink that will work with Pioneer as well or is something Kenwood has that needs the idatalink to get the data? By the way I have a Galaxy S5 if that helps. What I find odd is that even the 2015 phone list on Pioneer's site doesn't list the S5 for some features. |

You can't use the Pioneer radios with the Maestro dash kit because they do not have a climate control screen.
