Door Speakers

Looking to upgrade my door speakers. Ive read a few threads and mixed reviews about speakers and adapters and spacers.

I have a 2014 V6 (not premium)

I want some insight as to which are the best door speakers out there.

Also will i need adapters and spacers for all after-market speakers?

Thankyou! :)

Not sure about the speakers on the 2014, but on the 2012, the speakers come out and leave behind a plastic spacer that holds a 5" x 7" speaker.

I made up my own adapter plates out of 1/4" MDF to hold some old 5 1/4" MB Quart component speakers I had:

Attachment 195981

This is what one side looks like installed into the factor plastic spacer:

Attachment 195982

This is in conjunction with my trunk mounted sub. Now keep in mind that the sound wasn't great right away. It was too bright and a bit harsh.

Too dull the door a bit, I installed some sound deadening (Wirez) to some of the larger flat sections of metal on the inside panel of the doors. I did not cover the whole inner panel - not even close. I used about 3/4 of a square foot total on each door over about 6 different spots.

Then I adjusted the crossovers - I took about 4db out of the tweeters and it was perfect.

So I learned that not all speakers are going to work great right away. Sometimes you need to mess with stuff a bit. Having separates (or coaxial speakers) with adjustable crossovers helps quite a bit, but the sound deadening was probably the biggest improvement. The door is just flexible metal and speakers will sound pretty tinny if you can't make it a bit more solid.

that's pretty cool man..

I installed sound deadening mats on my previous car (eclipse 2007)...it has one of the best stereo systems...and after the sound deadening, it was unbelievable.

so i know exactly how that goes.

here i want to know the exact size that will fit. 6x8 or 5x7? and whats the difference?

and if ill be needing spacers and adapters( not a problem to order, but i need to know if they are required for ALL after-market speakers or not)

Plus give me some good brands and models of speakers...alpine? rockford fosgate? polk audio? pioneer? (need model numbers and prices that will be exact fit for my 2014 mustang)

sorry im new to mustangs lol

I have the stock, low end stereo in my 13' GT. I bought and installed these after reading positive reviews on another forum/thread:

They sound really good (highs are a seperate tweeter and much crisper than the all-in-one OEM paper cones).

They did not need any spacer/adapter for fitment, I just picked up the metra wiring harnesses from Best Buy and did the install in my garage in about 1/2 hour. Not sure why Amazon says they will not fit a 13-14 Mustang, the speakers are actually marked as "Custom-Fit for Ford Mazda".

Rando Nov 15, 2013 06:37 AM

Do you have the shaker 500? I think the speakers are a slightly different fit between models. If you have shaker 500, I recommend what Madscotsman suggested. I installed the same ones and they're great. However, order the harness from Crutchfield because the metra harness is backwards

iceD Nov 15, 2013 07:01 AM

what do you mean its backwards?

iceD Nov 15, 2013 07:07 AM

no i dont have the shaker 500.. my car is not premium nor gt.

its the base stupid ford speakers ...

iceD Nov 15, 2013 07:13 AM

are these going to fit? any good?

infinity speakers?

come on guyssssssssssssss

choate Nov 17, 2013 01:16 PM

I just installed the Pioneers and used the Metra adapter from Amazon. After orders I also read the threads about the positive and negative wires being "backwards" but after some more reading I just went ahead and used the Amazon harness b/c I wanted to get the install done and I don't see how another harness would make it sound better as it's a HUGE improvement over stock and I'm happy w/ it. After reading alot about reverse polarity (wires being backwards), it's an issue if you run component speakers (separate tweets, mids, subs) and really a non issue for the speakers mentioned in this thread. Both adapters (you get two in a pack) have "reversed polarity so your two speakers are going to be playing in time w/ each other anyways so it really doesn't matter. Hope this helps.

Oh and also, I have a shaker 500 and my car is a premium 2012. I read somewhere that the 13+ cars need the spacers to make aftermarket 6x8's work. You can order them from Tousley Ford for like $50 or something

I have the Infinity Reference 6832cf speakers in my 2014 Premium. I really like the huge improvement in sound. Way better than the stock speakers. I had to get the spacers for the doors from Tasca Ford.

iceD Nov 17, 2013 06:20 PM

im torn between the amazing brands out there like infinity, rockford fosgate, pioneer, alpine, kicker...

i don't know which to get...because i just wanna get the best ones in their price range ($65-$85)

Alot of them are marked down from $150...to $65 (like the pioneer)

Yes, you do need the spacers for the 13-14 premium. Got mine from Tasca Ford for around $40.

iceD Nov 17, 2013 06:40 PM

adapters or spacers? $40 adapters are too much lol. they go for $8 bucks on ebay and amazon

Yeah you'll need those too, but the other guy means spacers/brackets/whatever you wanna call em LoL. I have a 13 GT with the Shaker500 and I had to order a pair. $40 sounds about right.

We're on two different pages here. LOL. I was talking about the speaker adapters that allow you to install 5x7/6x8 speakers in the doors of the Shaker system since the door speakers are "component". I wasn't referring to the speaker "wire" adapters. Sorry for the confusion.

These are the part numbers for the spacers.
4R3Z18B947AA - Right Side Door
4R3Z18B947BA - Left Side (Driver) Door
You have to purchase these from a 2010 Mustang GT as Ford does not have a spacer for the 2013/2014.
I hope this link works.http://www.tascaparts.com/parts/2010...iagram=JC10465
It's part number 7. And it is called a speaker spacer not adapter.
