My turn .. PlastiDip Brembo wheels on my Kona GT

Been wanting to do this for a while ... finally stop procrastinating and did it today. Super easy ... Plastidip is nothing like paint .. very forgiving .. no runs, drips or overspray.

I jacked the back axle and did two at a time .. which also let me rotate my back wheels to the front ....

I keep hearing stories of this stuff lasting 6-12 months ... we shall see.

GRN 5OH 7/28/12 11:29 AM

That looks awesome, I want to do that to mine. Brilliant idea with the index cards.

That looks great. How many cans did you use? They sell gloss black ones now on TireRack. $245 per wheel. PlastiDip is a much cheaper alternative. I had Plasti on the grill of my Benz I just traded in for the GT and it lasted over a year. Even with getting hit with bugs and rocks and getting pressure washed. Never once had any issues with it.

dmhines 7/28/12 11:47 AM

I used a little less than 3 cans for the 4 wheels. I gave it 3 good coats. Most instructions say to make first coat a lighter dusting coat .. but I did a full coat for 1st coat too.

I bought some clear wheel paint thinking I would clear coat them and make them glossier. But when I saw how good they came out .. I was too chicken to possibly mess them up with the the clear.

Yes ... Ford Racing sells the Brembo Package wheels in Gloss black .. I think the Satin looks better though. and you get can them way cheaper than $245 per wheel .. check eBay.

I'm going to keep these and just get some CCW wheels for the track and summer.

I personally don't care for black wheels, but you did a really nice job with those!

Bullitt 3309 7/30/12 01:05 PM

Turned out great, I bought some glossifier as well for mine to add a little shine. Still haven't done it yet, work is killing me right now...

Def a great idea, I think it looks great. However for darker cars myself (maybe cause I am old) I like brighter wheels and reverse for brighter cars like darker rims.

looks very clean bro, good job!

Killa-B 7/30/12 08:10 PM

That turned out great. Might have to do this to mine.

You say your getting those gold wheels?

Looks awesome! Very nice with the kona blue

Definitely looks great but I also am questioning the mentioning of those gold wheels.

Reason to do a light 1st coat is to get better bonding. If you do it too thick, yours might flake easier. Plasti-dip bonds to it-self, in that if it comes in contact with it-self, it will re-liquify and bond better. A light 1st coat allows it to bond to the wheel surface, then subsequent coats will bond to each other better. Patience is key with plasti-dip.

They looks awesome though! Keep us posted on how they last.

I did my wheels in April, and they are holding up just fine since then, minus a few rock dings that I haven't gotten around to fixing (super small, hardly noticeable).

Looks perfect! Great job!

Stevedotmil 8/6/12 07:32 PM

No the style not the gold. If anything they would be gloss black or dark bronze.

Looks great man. :nice:

I was just about to say, you can get gloss black track pack wheels from FRPP for a lot cheaper. I think the discount dealer by me has em for $165??

the_bottomless_pit 8/7/12 08:41 AM
