Oil separator

Is an oil separator necessary is our car? I see GT owners say it is, but how about V6s? If so, is there a brand people prefer? Thanks

Glenn 2/1/15 02:44 AM

I don't think it necessary because Ford didn't put one in to start with. Same with the GT. That,s just my 2 cents

Like Glenn said. The GT doesn't need one any more than the V6 does. I have one on my V6 'only' because i don't want blow by oil going into my intake and being burned in my combustion chamber. You'll be fine without one. Just saying..............:)

The 4.6L3V at 15k without an oil sep:

For some unknown reason Ford runs a straight breather tube without any type of one way valve (PCV valve) to reduce blow by gases entering the intake. Those blow by gases also affect your A/F ratio and enter post MAF.

What does one look like that has ran an oil separator for most of its life?

Tony:
FWIW, I had a JLT separator on the 2011 and pulled the intake at 90K to look at it. (on it for 70K of all highway duty).

Results were only a light film of oil in the intake runners.... way less than my old '99 V6 Contour SVT which had an 1/8th inch of black gunk coating all the intakes from the PVC and blowby after 120k of no separator:

A NASTY cleanup.

Is it needed ? Eh, maybe. :dunno: Doesn't hurt though.

Ford doesn't put one on at the factory because they know that most people wouldn't bother to empty it on a regular basis. So it would be just as if there wasn't one on the car anyway (or worse potentially by sucking up the fluid out of the can in greater quantities and running that into the intake).

I am thinking getting one. Originally I don't think I need it. But after reading some awful stories of C7 Vette I am starting think about it. Direct injection engines are more sensitive to by-pass gas deposit.

At the end of the day, it doesn't hurt. It's like some people change their oil religiously. Just play safe.

i am not technical, but got a used one from Gabe and it has been for last 1 year. every time (once a month) i look at it i find 1/4 of oil in it. so i guess it works

i installed mine a few thousand kms ago. when i open it up for the first time, i will take a pic of how much it collected

I would definitely say go for it. The more contaminants you can keep out of the engine the better, and for less than $100 it's cheap insurance down the road.

this is after 2000 KMs

I have a friend that is a mechanic at a Lexus dealership. He said the industry's dirty little secret is the carbon buildup on the back of the intake valves on the DI engines. He also said a catch can is a good idea, but the average Joe will never remember to empty it.
