Gears Question

I'm thinking about upgrading my gears from stock to either 3.73 or 3.90.

I was wondering if anyone had experience with either of these and what your thoughts were on the matter.

A lot of us v6'ers have changed our gears. I went from the factory option 3.31's to 3.73 Ford Racing gears. Big improvement, even from the 3.31's.

If 'Ford Racing' made the 3.90 gear ratio, i would have went with that ratio. I've read bad things here and there about other gear makers :(

What gears do you have now? Is it auto or Manual?

What do you plan to do with the car?

Thanks for your thoughts guys.

It's a manual, and it currently has 2.73 gears in it. It's mostly a weekend car (I have another), but every few weeks I bring it to the strip and run the quarter mile with it. She's currently doing a little over fifteen seconds currently. I'd like to drop that a bit.

I have been Drag Racing for ever. The best track gear I have used is 3.73. You will change your times for sure. Search this form and others for the Gear ratio chart. Several people have came up with them.
My son is looking for a 2013 or 2014 V6 and I have been told to go with the higher number gear and that most have found with the V6 especially with auto works well with them. Ihave a 2014 Gt Track car and I will tell you I wish I had the 3.55 only because the car has tons of Torque and the 1st gear in the manual is really low. Enjoy the car.

That's interesting. Looking around some people simply say that a higher ratio = better at the track.

I think I'm going to go with the 3.73. Thanks for the info.

Next up will be getting the car to hook better.

Well, not really. It depends where you're at in the RPM range at the finish line. Ideally you want to just get to the redline point when you cross the line. If you change the gearing so you have to upshift right before the finish line that will likely cause you to be slower.

There's a lot of variables with racing, it's the sum of the total parts that need to be considered, not just one variable. So make sure a gear change is really required for you, and do the math to see which ratio makes the most sense.

This is accurate information.
