3.73 Gears
3.73 Gears
When I was buying my car, they had the same one with 3.73 rear differential gears already installed - but I thought I'd save the $300 and go with the stock 2.73. I regret that now because I think the 3.73 would have added a serious amount of torque.
I am contemplating buying the part from American Muscle. Does anyone know how much it would cost to install at a shop? Should I just have my dealer install so it can be kept in warranty?
Thanks!

Most shops in my area get about $500-$600 with gears and speedo correction. For a good shop this is a basic job. A dealer is going to charge more the poster above got ripped imho. Dez racing rebuilt my entire rear end with a new diff, gears, master kit and axles for over what he paid just for gears

lol so in other words, i should have bought the one with 3.73 off the lot!! my salesman said, if you're not racing, you don't need the 3.73. what a total noob i am.
i'll try to get a few quotes next week. i'm leaning towards getting the dealer to do the work so it stays under warranty, but the $1500 tag seems really high. i don't even need a new diff since it's only a month old, so i was hoping the cost would stay in the $500-$700 range.
:fingers crossed:

I had my dealer install my 3.73 gears (Ford Racing) i ordered from American Muscle. Gears, labor, all new bearings and seals and two lube changes (i did the second 500 mile change myself) was right around $1,000.
I went from 3.31 to 3.73 gears. Worth every cent. 60 m.p.h. is right around 2,000 r.p.m.

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...tKeyField=9291 They gotta remove the stock one anyway. Find a Ford Racing dealership nearest and they will have all the parts, gears cover and all.

Exactly !!!!! But in my case, the factory does not install 3.73 or even 3.55 in a convertible. The 3.31 was the highest they would go from the factory. It has to something with more torque and possibly twisting the frame since the car has no top. Later finding out from Ford Racing, the factory was just being over conscious . And there it is . Done.
If you want a bump in off the line feel over your taller gears but still have decent gas mileage have you thought about 3.27s. Don't knock the 3.27s they are a great gear also. It maybe the going rate out your guys way but really a grand for a gear install is just plain crazy.
Your probably right. 3.73's are specialy ordered as option by the customer and there are not too many out there sitting in the lot. They're mostly 3.31's or may be even 3.55's and the higher gear ratios are manuals only, unless modified afterwards.

I don't have a GT so this really doesn't concern me. But thank you for the info, I'm sure someone will find it helpful.
See first post?
LOL Heels are a woman's version of torque. Force/power with every step.
