JLT Oil Separator for the 5.0
 

For several weeks we have been testing our JLT Oil Separators on our 5.0. We make these plug and play for 05-10 GT’s, 07-11 GT500, 99-04 Cobras and more, so we mocked one up on the 5.0 and started checking it often.
After only a few miles we had oil in the cup, but after a week and only about 30 +/- normal driving miles we have at least 1.5+ tablespoons of oil that we kept out of the intake manifold.
We spent many weeks testing this product on our 5.0 as well as sending tester kits to others and have had great sucess in stopping oil from getting in the intake on the new 5.0.

You will get most from the side with the PCV valve, which is the passenger side on the 5.0, but you will also get a small amount from the other as well.
Oil in the PCV system is normal, but you want to do everything you can to keep it out. It will gum up your intake runners, throttle body blades, valves and even dilute your fuel.
I was very surprised at the amount of oil I found, but our separator will take care of it.
They are milled from Billet Aluminum, have 3/8 NPT threaded inserts and use a Ford factory metal mesh PCV filter. Plug and play kits use OEM Ford PCV lines

We use OEM Ford PCV lines and they come pre cut with the JLT separator installed for a 15 second plug and play install.

JLT Oil Separators

This is a great part to pick up for added insurance. Blow-by has been a pretty big issue for the S197's, and it's been proven that an oil separator like JLT's above is highly recommended, and almost a necessity if you are running FI.

I ordered mine, and I am completely happy with the kit. It's OEM hoses, and it installs in less time than it does to check your tire pressure.

$120 or so for this added security is well worth it in my book!

I've driven about 100 miles with mine, and I've already collected about a teaspoon of oil.

i am going to order one of these from you guys...quick question, do you just cut the existing line, or does it come with new lines?

Neat little gadget, i might get mine as well, not too much time consuming, i like that .

You can order it with or without the new lines from what I've read on other forums. not much cheaper to order without so you might as well get them.

The enclosed picture shows the amount of oil in the JLT separator after 1 week of commuting to/from work and never went above 5K RPM. FWIW, I've practically had oil dripping out of the filter on my 2001 Lightning, but didn't think it would be this bad for a NA motor. Then again, I've replaced intake gaskets on my 2000 540i and 2001 Suburban and both intakes are completely coated with oil on the inside... The shadow is making it look like a ton of oil. There was probably a bit less than a teaspoon in there. Still more than I would like getting sucked back into the intake.

A :nice: to JLT for a beautifully machined catch can with a clean OEM fit.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone been to the dealership for an oil change with one of these installed? Did it raise any eyebrows?

Jason, why do you think it would raise eyebrows? The PCV system remains intact...

I'm not saying it would, but it is something that is attached to the motor that doesn't come from the factory. I wouldn't want to be in a position where some sort of motor issue came up and the dealership began to question why it was there and whether it not it contributed to the problem.

I can see the benefit of adding this, and think it's a good idea. I was just curious how a dealership would react to it.

If there are any doubt at all, just unclip the JLT separator and replace the original hose before taking the car to the dealership. 30 seconds, max.

Got mine today and did the quick install. Those factory hoses are the cat's a$$. Literally made for a 1 minute install.

If anyone is still on the fence for the JLT, DO IT! This is a very nice setup. A little too small maybe (more frequent checks) but very nice.

There's no doubt in my mind that the catch can is beneficial. I had one on my recently traded SRT8 Charger and, without it, the PCM was pulling timing at high RPM no doubt from the contaminated intake charge. As soon as I installed a catch can, the timing stayed steady.

Put mine in last week, install couldn't be easier, took 30 seconds and it works great :)

Anybody who installed this is there any noticeable performance improvement ?

Any con's to running a catch can?
