changing Mt82 fluid
I know there has been much discussion on this topic, i'm putting the 2.7 quarts of mtl in my trans and am asking the best way to figure out exactally how much is .7 of a quart?
|
There should be a fill hole on the side of your trans. Just fill to the hole until it starts to run out. Try and keep the car level when filling. Don't be surprised if it takes all 3 quarts.
|
So same as filling a diff.
|
Yep, same as a diff. Mine took 3.4qts to fill up to the hole. Dunno why, but it did. And the car was perfectly level.
|
Well looks like I need one more quart I only got 3.
|
I drained the old fluid, measured the level in the drain pan, dumped and cleaned, and filled the container back to the same level with the new MTL.
|
How many quarts did you need?

As for filling to the bottom of the fill hole, I checked Ford's online service publications and they are very specific about using 2.7 quarts. Putting in more than that constitutes overfilling and Ford warns that it may cause the gearbox seals to leak. I believe that the 6 cylinder transmission is filled to the bottom of the hole, but the V8 is filled to a slightly lower level. |

Easiest way is to open one of the bottles, pour out 1 cup (8 ounces) into a measuring cup and then install the rest in the transmission. That'll be 2.75 quarts less a bit that sticks to the inside of the bottles.

the trans fluid (redline mtl) talked about goes inside the trans case, lubes and cools the gears only fluid related to the clutch is the brake fluid |

My bad miss worded that not clutch but trying to avoid trans problems with the hard shifts. Trying to post while at work:)
Redline MTL or Royal Purple 75w90 gear oil are my choices for tranny fluid. |
I use Redline MTL and have been happy with it.
|
^^^^^this, mine is still shifting smoothly. Must say it is now stored in heated garage for winter.

Job done! I put the same amount in that I removed. Seems to be a little better hopefully the longer it's in the better it gets, already put the mgw shifter in so this is the last step to nice shifting ..hopefully..
If this works than the dealer really will be surprised considering they told me it was fine in the first place. Not that I'm taking it back to them or anything. That ford oem fluid is the strangest fluid I've ever seen or smelled! Yuck!! |
The owner's manual has different levels specified for V6 and GT. V6 is the normal to the bottom of the fill hole. For some reason unknown (but some have guessed), GT is slightly lower.

Im looking to swap the trans and diff fluid in my 2012 V6 and have heard that the RP oil isn't a good match for the 2011+ MTs. Although I would like to get it and swap it in I don't want to harm my tranny.
|
I had Royal Purple and switched to MTL. I like both but the RP is pretty thick in cold weather. If your in southern climates you'll be fine with either. The combination of new fluid and a new shifter/bushing made a world of difference from the get go. I did this with less than 500 miles on the car.
