You have a track pack or BOSS? Those are the only ones calling for 5w50.

I use Mobil 1 myself.

Mixed reviews. I've had service personnel tell me they use it at their dealerships, and these are BMW and Land Rover dealerships, because it wears better--again, according to them--than Mobil 1 or other equivalent 5W50's. I have changed the oil twice now in my GT500, and have used it both times. I've had three oil analyses done, one on the original factory oil when I changed it the first time, the 2nd analysis when the 2nd oil change was at 1500 into its life, and the 3rd earlier this week when I changed out the oil again with another round of the Castrol 5W50. The Castrol read low on a lot of the viscosity measurements from the 2nd analysis; I am waiting to see if they still read low on the 3rd analysis, which I should receive mid- to late next week. I'm not talking alarm-bells-going-off low, it was just out of range, but...yeah, it was just out of range. The engine is showing reduced wear volumes in most metals, though, which is very good--but I don't know if it's because of the oil or because it's a hand-built 5.8L Trinity engine and not a factory-assembled 5.0.

Do an oil analysis at 3k (drain off a small amount) and see how it's doing. There are lots of opinions out there but analysis is the only real way to determine how the oil is performing. I plan on trying a couple types and doing analysis to determine the best performing oil for my car

Guess I would ask what Castrol 5w-50 you guys are talking about - GTX, SynBlend, Edge with Syntec or Edge?

I think they are talking about Syntec. That's the only full synthetic 5W50 that I have found from them.

I have been using Castrol full synthetic since my original oil change after break in (4 changes now). All the oil analysis I have done have shown excellent results and in fact I could have gone further than the cars oil monitor advised me and I tend to drive hard quite a lot. It uses no oil over the time between changes.

Thanks for the update. Do you have the results sheet from the testing? If so, can you post them in here so we can see what it does in the motor?

That's awesome thanks. Looks like I might just use this for the next oil change instead of the boutique brands.

Be careful that you're not using the high zinc Castrol 5W-50 made for classic cars, you catalytic converters will not be happy:

Good to know. That's all that they have here for that brand and weight. I guess RP it is then.

I think it has a lot to do with being a hand assembled engine. That is the bet part of our cars we are fortunate to have them.

Where's TexasBoneKing? I can't believe he's not getting mid-evil on you for using 5-50 in your engine unless it's a Boss 302 which calls for it.

Because his car is a Track Pack which also calls for 5-50.

Are you sure on that? I just bought 10 Quarts and now I am not sure if I should be using it since I read your post. This is the one I bought:

I'm not sure what levels of zinc are in that oil, you might be okay. It's probably not as much as Brad Penn or something like that, but it surely is higher than Motorcraft.
