3:31 vs 3:73

At the press junket for the 5.0, journalist were allowed to drag race against a yellow 2010 Camaro. Both the Ford and Chevy cars with Automatics. So, it's it fair to say that those Mustangs were fitted with the 3:31axles? Surely Ford wouldn't have rigged the cars with a lower gear to make sure that they had an advantage?

Viewing those videos, I was pretty impressed with the "get up and go" of the Mustangs.

Question? What would be the difference in E.T. in a quarter mile between a 3:31 vs 3.73 equipped 5.0?

I thought you could still option the automatic out to have 3.73 gear?

No and no. The Auto has 3.15s only.

Actually, if I'm reading the Ford Mustang brochure correctly, the autos ONLY come with a 3:15...maybe it's the Manual 6-speed that comes equipped with 3:31 standard...I do know that the 3:55 & 3:73 are optional for the Manual Trans ONLY.

I didn't know that. Learn something new every day.

3:15 vs 3:73?

OK...correction...What would be the difference in E.T. in a quarter mile between a 3:15 vs 3.73 equipped 5.0?

3.73 on a automatic 2011 will be too low since the first gear in the tranny is so low, 4.17:1.

Lowest rear gear I would go with on a automatic car for the street would be a 3.31.

That is why those automatic cars were launching so hard at the press first drive tests.

Thanks for that bit of info...to be honest, it totally slipped my mind to check the tranny gears. BUT...I do have another question...with the manual, there's a 1st to 4th skip shift...will this be the same with the Autos?

No, won't skip gears on the auto but will upshift faster to get to high gear instead.

It is possible it might start in 2nd on a light throttle start. I dont know enough about the 6R80 or the specific program in the Copperhead PCM to say.

From a person who's had turbocharged automatics in the past-

If you put a Supercharger kit or turbo kit kit, or nitrous on an automatic 5.0- THIS THING WOULD SCREAM! Especially if the auto is modified too, and will allow for greater stall during the launch. Automatics are so freakin fast... and you never want a higher gear when you have the power adder anyways. With that said-

It would be interesting to see the 1/4, 1/8th, & 60 ft times, for the automatic 5.0 and see the difference compared to a 3.73. Trust me, someone will do it soon. If anyone sees the 5.0 Automatic track times or ET's, please let me know or post a link on this thread.

Thanks

I doubt that the auto would start in 2nd, but it will probably shift into second at 10MPH if not sooner.

I have the Automatic, and I just left some pretty impressive black marks in the Tire Rack parking lot, so the auto's have plenty of gearing, at least for me.

LMAO. . . couldn't wait, could you?

You will probably get more performance from a higher stall converter in the auto rather than lower gears in the rearend.

Nope, just hoping I didn't get the guy at Tire Rack in trouble, hopefully will have some pics of it eventually.

BUT it did leave some real nice dark ones, both tires, maybe 20 or 30 feet.

I did that at the local NTB when I had new tires put on my '79 Zephyr, I had just installed the line-lock and he wanted to see it in action! :D
