....after a fall while skiing.

That's just crazy to have something like that take you out after all those years of racing.

Sad indeed . . . and the rollercoaster of reports yesterday left me wondering what the heck was really going on. At one point, I read he was fine and just had his 'bell rung.'

Manager says Michael Schumacher's condition 'stable'

Published January 01, 2014
The manager of retired Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher said Wednesday that her client's condition was "stable" overnight following a skiing accident in the French Alps Sunday.
Sabine Kehm told reporters that Schumacher, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, was being carefully looked after, but remains in intensive care.
""The good news for today is ... there's no significant changes," Kehm said, according to the Associated Press.
"His condition remains stable this morning. At the moment, this is good news but I don't want to go into further prospects as it is too early. He is still in an artificial coma," Kehm said, according to Reuters.

Schumacher family reportedly told 'only a miracle' can save driver

Published March 09, 2014
The family of legendary Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher has reportedly been told that "only a miracle" can save him.
Britain's Daily Telegraph reported Saturday say that the seven-time world champion's wife and brother have been consulting brain specialists and been told that his chances of recovery are minimal.
Schumacher has been in an artificially induced coma at a French hospital for over two months after suffering serious brain injuries in a fall while skiing at an Alpine resort in late December. The driver's management team has maintained that doctors have reduced the drug levels in an attempt to bring Schumacher into a 'wake-up' phase.
However, the Telegraph reported that Schumacher's family is now concerned that doctors will assume that Schumacher will be in a vegetative state for the rest of his life. Two weeks ago, a German magazine reported that doctors had been forced to put Schumacher back into a coma as a result of complications from the 'wake-up' process. That report was strenuously denied by Schumacher spokeswoman Sabine Kehm.
"[Schumacher] is in a bad way, but until the family issues a formal statement, we cannot publish anything," a German journalist told the Telegraph Saturday. Another source said, "Doctors have given it to them straight. Miracles sometimes happen, but there is little hope that he will come out of this."

It's too bad. Just shows how fragile life can really be. Enjoy each day for what it is.

Manager: Schumacher has 'moments of consciousness'
Apr 4, 6:37 AM EDT

GRENOBLE, France (AP) -- Michael Schumacher is now showing "moments of consciousness and awakening," more than three months after suffering serious head injuries in a skiing accident, the retired Formula One star's manager said Friday.

Schumacher, 45, fell while skiing in France on Dec. 29 and hit the right side of his head on a rock, cracking his helmet. Doctors operated to remove blood clots from his brain, but some were left because they were too deeply embedded.

Schumacher's condition stabilized after he was placed in a drug-induced coma. In late January, doctors at a hospital in the French city of Grenoble began the process of withdrawing sedatives to try to wake him up.

"Michael is making progress on his way," Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, said in a statement Friday. "He shows moments of consciousness and awakening."

"We are on his side during his long and difficult fight, together with the team of the hospital in Grenoble, and we keep remaining confident," Kehm said.

She added that she and Schumacher's family "do not intend to disclose details. This is necessary to protect the privacy of Michael and his family, and to enable the medical team to work in full calmness."

Schumacher earned acclaim for his uncommon and sometimes ruthless driving talent, which took him to a record 91 race wins. He retired from Formula One in 2012 after winning an unmatched seven world titles.

The accident happened on a family vacation in the Alps as Schumacher was skiing with his 14-year-old son.

That is encouraging news. I hope he can pull through it.

I've been wondering how he was doing. It's good to see he's improving.

still not looking good, all these months later...

I heard some musings about him doing better and responding to voices. But I only saw it from one news source, so I don't know that I believe it.

I think it's safe to assume the worst until news breaks. If there is significant progress every news source will have a story. Mumblings here and there are most likely just guesses or cleverly inserted partial quotes from semi-knowledgeable sources.

He's awake apparently... step in the right direction! :nice:

Manager says Michael Schumacher released from French hospital

Published June 16, 2014
Seven-time Formula One champion driver Michael Schumacher has left a French hospital nearly seven months after suffering a severe head injury in a skiing accident that nearly ended his life.

Manager Sabine Kehm says in a statement that Schumacher, 45, had left the hospital in Grenoble "to continue his long phase of rehabilitation." The statement did not say where the seven-time F1 champion was taken or give any details of his condition except to say, "He is not in a coma anymore."

Doctors in Grenoble put the German into a coma to rest his brain and decrease swelling, and they operated to remove blood clots, but some were too deeply embedded.

Kehm's statement added, "For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye."

Little information has been released on Schumacher's condition over recent months. Monday's statement was the first substantial update since Kehm said in early April that Schumacher "shows moments of consciousness and awakening."
