How is this survivable? (Jules Bianchi crash)

For those that don't know, F1 driver Jules Bianchi had a HORRIBLE crash at Suzuka during the Japanese F1 Grand Prix. Sliding off the track in the rain Bianchi's car drove UNDER a forklift that was trying to remove the damaged car of Adrian Sutil at more than 100mph.

Bianchi was severely injured and underwent emergency brain surgery. He's currently in intensive care and his survival is still questionable.

But after seeing the picture, I'm amazed that he's alive at all......

What I'm confused about, wasn't there a full course yellow with safety car on track at the time? Why was he going so fast as to not see the wreck and the big yellow thing so as not to take that corner fast?

Not sure about the full course yellow and there is a spectator video supposedly showing a green flag right before his crash, but I haven't watched it.

Edit: Here is the article, http://www.racer.com/f1/item/109456-...ur-video-shows

Local yellow, green flag was after the accident location.

Oh... I was nodding in and out for a bit there (races in the rain bore me). The safety car must have come out after that.
But I did see Hamilton's great pass on the outside of Rosberg.

I watched the video and he's alive because he's very lucky (well, duh) but seriously, he's quite lucky the angle of impact. What happened is that he took a pretty shallow angle into the tractor, when the nose of the car and the front wheel/suspension hit the tractor, they hit it with enough force to get the tractor to rise up. Just as it was rising up, it gave a glancing blow to Bianchi's helmet, and then fell back to normal height destroying the engine bay.

Had he not hit as fast as he did, enough to raise the tractor up a bit, he'd have quite possibly been decapitated.
