24 Heuers du Mans

anyone else watching?

Had some interesting racing so far, LMP1 cars are going at it. Going to be interesting to see the Audi speed vs Toyota efficiency.

Crazy hard hit for #95 Aston Martin at Tete Rouge, into the Armco barrier, but with a tree right behind it. Updates say driver is conscious, but apparently not in very good shape otherwise.

Sad news indeed. Nasty crash. Good race overall with tire strategy playing a good part. I'm watching in spurts and checking online with phone.

I'm not sure something on the car didn't break. There's video from one of the Corvettes that was following the AM and it looked awful squirrelly in the corners before, and I'm sure the wet paint lines/curbs didn't help.

4 hours 15 minutes to go. Been an eventful race so far, but so much time behind the safety cars that any pre-race strategy has long since gone out the window.

And looks like another rain shower might be added to the mix (again) before the checker flag. Really hoping the Dempsey #77 can move up the podium. With Flying Lizard not competing I'd like to see Long get a class win . . . I miss the Lizards!

As do I. They just decide not to run this year?

One of the drivers said that he's never raced anywhere under conditions where every lap is different like here. It's gotta be a bit scary to drive on the track the way it is, not knowing where it's a bit wet.

The Lizards seem to be in a transition year. They did not take (or were not) part of the new 911 GT3 RSR program for ALMS . . . for whatever reason. So they got a couple of Porsche Cup cars to race in the second tier of GT cars in ALMS and there is no class for those cars at Le Mans this year. And I can't seem to confirm what their plans are going forward.

I will say that it stinks there isn't one Ford powered car in the field. Their absence does dampen (no pun intended) my viewing pleasure somewhat. At least when FMC owned Aston (and part of Mazda) there was a connection. Hard to believe no Mazda powered LMP2 cars as well.

Zee Germans make it real hard to compete in LeMans, as it takes a hefty budget to run with them. It's obviously worst in P1, which should just be re-named "the Audi division," but Porsche dominates the production classes nearly to the same extent. GM dumps bank into the Corvette team, and they were completely outclassed this year. I'm hopeful that Don Panoz is able to get the Daytona prototypes in via P2 or their own class, that would allow Ford a chance to run their EB cars without a huge investment.

Question

I have not been following Don Panoz lately. Is he still aligned with Ford racing programs ?

No but he drove the effort to unite IMSA and Grand Am into United SportsCar Racing, which is merging Grand Am's Daytona Prototypes with ALMS' P2 in the US. He's also lobbying to get ACO to evolve LMP2 in such a way that the American prototype cars can cross the Atlantic for Le Mans in the future.

I would bet that will happen in 2015 . . . with the possibility of the 4th generation DPs.

hopefully by then the DP's wont be quite so ugly. The only decent looking ones now are the Corvettes.

They've gotten better over the years. I like the Michael Shank Riley/Fords and next year the Fords will have specific bodywork too.

yeah, they've definitely gotten better, though they couldn't go too far the other way, haha! When they first came out, they were flat awful!

All the prototypes are ugly right now. The LMP1s look like caricatures, and Nissan's DW looks like a Austin Powers joke car. In that company, the new Ford is fine:

Though I do miss the days of really cool LMPs:

those Panoz cars are what made me fall in love with racing, that and the Trans-Am Mustangs from the 90's. Love that long hood, with the cockpit basically added on back, just a motor with a driver taped on.

I do kinda have a thing for the R18's though.
