Without Steve it's not a Saleen, sorry. OMG I just noticed it's priced higher than a 500. LOL

Cool.

I'd take this over any one of Steve's SMS Mustangs all day long! I really have no idea what the difference was when Steve was a "part" of Saleen; to me, Saleen produced their wildest, best-looking, most-impressive vehicles devoid of the man whose name their company bears...

...well, not anymore. It appears as though Saleen Performance Vehicles' new name is "Speedlab."

I guess the general public didn't agree, because they're done. "Speedlab" that name sounds familiar and that "S" looks a lot like the original.

Steve's been gone since, what, 2007? And how do you know that the public had anything to do with the name change to "Speedlab?" Maybe Revstone was just sick and tired of the very thing you and I are doing right now. Perhaps they felt the best way to showcase their beautiful Mustang and the performance parts associated with it was to leave the Saleen name and the drama associated with it in the past where it belongs. If anything, though, the new Saleen (Speedlab) has more of a presence than ever. The only thing "done" with this company, it appears, is the name "Saleen." Big deal.

Where's Steve and SMS at?

When I said they're done. I meant they're done building vehicles. I'm pretty sure "speedlab" was Steve's also but I'm not positive on that. I think the few times I went to Saleen the name "speedlab" was in the showroom and that was 13 yrs ago. Hey if Revstone can build a good mustang all power to them. It seems to me that you should be able to do it without resting on someone else's work. If GENERAL ELECTRIC bought out Shelby and still produced vehicles, would it be a Shelby?

You're right, they're done building vehicles under the Saleen Performance Vehicles moniker. Revstone / MJA has been building excellent vehicles for a few years now; prior to then, Hancock Park was building great cars, too (Saleen Dark Horse, Heritage models, etc). I just look at what SMS is doing -- building cars with pathetically-fitting body panels; slapping "SMS" badges on old Saleen Series 6 superchargers; constantly taking jabs at Revstone and MJA -- juxtapose that with what SPV / "Speedlab" has been doing of late. They're breaking records on road courses; they're building beautiful Mustangs with OEM-like build quality; they've designed and are set to release their Series 7 supercharger right after releasing the much-improved Saleen Series 6.5 compressor (they now machine their own twin-screw rotors, too, which is not easy). If anything, Steve and SMS are resting on a name while Revstone / MJA / SPJ / Speedlab are innovating.

If Ford designs, engineers and builds a "Shelby" GT500, is it still a "Shelby?"

The 500 has always been built like that. Ford isn't using the Shelby name without consent. Like I said if Revstone can make a good mustang, I'm all for it but you have to agree they were using the Saleen name for the history.

Well, then Ford's doing the exact same thing if, like you said, it's always been like that. Hey, if there's already a brand established with quite a bit of recognition, and you pay for it, why not use it? Obviously, MJA couldn't have foreseen the spectacle that unfolded by using the "Saleen" brand name; rather than letting the drama bury them, though, I have to respect them for going with a different brand name instead of folding altogether.

Revstone has been building Mustangs since the 2010 435S and 2010 S281. The only review I can find of the S281 is the one that Autoblog wrote last year. They seem to really like the car, though.

I don't think it's the same thing. Ford/Shelby work together. In 67 Ford wanted a 500 and in Shelby produced them in LA that year but, Ford wanted the 500 to pay it's way and Shelby just didn't have the facilities to pump them out. Ford built the 500 since 68 so I don't see how it's the same. I agree an established brand will probably sell but I hate to see these great mustangs being "watered" down if you know what I mean. The history of the mustang gets hurt in my opinion.

Absolutely, I understand what you're saying; if the current owners of Saleen were just rehashing the "same ol'," I'd definitely agree with you. They aren't. The vehicles and products they're releasing now, or set to release in the not-too-distant future, are some of the most impressive, innovative products they've ever produced. Furthermore, when MJ Acquisitions purchased Saleen a couple of years ago, they retained most of the Saleen staff: Jess Albright, designer Dave Byron, Tony Fedora, and others. Saleen / Speedlab is in good hands. I believe this company will strive on its own, away from the shadow the Saleen name currently casts, as "Speedlab."
