The GT500 shifter.
 

Those of you who are Shelby owners, how do you like the shifter in the GT500? I'm asking because I'm curious how it compares to the shifter most mustangs use. Heck for all I know, they could all use the same one though I'm guessing the Shelby and possibly the BOSS use different shifters. Back story: on the GT I owned previously, I had a Hurst short-throw installed and LOVED it in comparison to the shifter that came with the car. Any opinions/feedback would be greatly appreciated. If necessary, I would be willing to install another shifter, so if there are those without Shelbys that have replaced their shifter as well, please feel free to chime in. Thanks. :nice:

I'll be straight with you. The stock shifter is a spongy POS. It was the first thing to go. MGW win

I totally disagree. I find the shifter in my 2010 GT500 to be awesome. Very tight and nice short throws. It is on par with the MGW I had in my 2006 GT.

If you think the stock shifter is that good, you would be in shifter heaven with an MGW, because it's that much better than stock.

Boss/GT's use a completely different trans and shifter.

MGW or bust for any car. Takes any shifter from good to incredibly great.

Umm.. saw a BOSS 302 window sticker and it clearly said MT82 transmission.

I think he meant BOSS/GT uses completely different shifter than GT500.

I agree with R3troGT. I'm completely satisfied with the shifter in my 11 GT500. It is very precise compared with many shifters in the past. For the general public, it is more than adequate for most drivers. There is always room for improvement in any mechanical devise, but for most of us, I think this shifter is superlative. Just my 2 cents.

This! Especially after you break the shifter in (well for me at least).

Ummm....Different from the gt500.

GT/Boss uses the MT-82. GT500 uses TR6060. MGW all the way for any of them.

I too, was "happy" with the stock shifter. Or so I thought. In comes MGW... it's everything it's cracked up to be, and MORE. Just goes to show, you never know just how GOOD something is, until you actually have/try it.


See my post above. You "think" stock is great.... wait till you try MGW.

The OP's question was about the GT500 shifter, not the GT. While I have no experience with the 11+ GT shifter the stock S197 was always very lose and the MGW is certainly way ahead and a must replacement

I didn't care much for the stock GT500 shifter. Installed a Ford Racing short throw shifter. Very smooth shifts.

I understand the op's question. My response (and hence why i quoted the other guys comment) was to second and confirm his mgw praise.

I'm sure the aftermarket (MGW) shifter is probably better. I'm not willing to dole out $250/300.00 for a different shifter, since I'm content with the stock one. Definitly not enough return for the money spent, IMHO. It really all boils down to individual preference. It simply doesn't matter that much to me, as I don't take the car to competition events where that might become a marginal factor. As with all aftermarket pieces, there is a market for them with some owners. Just not me.

I have a 2012 GT500, and the last adjective I would use to describe the shifter is "spongy". I find the throws very short and fairly precise, and a little bit notchy. If the MGW is less notchy, while being more precise...I'm there!

Not sure if Owning/driving a mgw maybe gives it a "marginal" lead over a stock shifter during competitions, etc. I mean maybe it does, but that's not the point. It's not about that. Shifting an mgw is pure bliss... My one way of truly connecting with my car. And that to ME, is worth the price of admission to own an mgw. But like you said, to each his own.

Couldn't agree more. I find the stock shifter in my '12 to be tight and with the perfect amount of "click" when going into gear. I'd kill to have a shifter this tight in my Fox-based TKO500 transmission. I've heard of "play" in the shifter - mine has no more than 1/8" so they either vary a lot or Ford has tweaked it over the years.

1/8 of inch LOL I don't see how that is possible. Even with the MUCH MUCH firmer bushings of the MGW it has more play than that. The stock shifter is garbage.
