Ticking noise
1 Attachment(s)
Hey how’s everyone doing I’m new to the community I just got my mustang. Looking to rebuild her. But she’s gonna be my daily for a while. I’m having a problem with her. I have a ticking noise and can’t seem to figure it out. I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I need it. I can rev her and she still drives although I did stop driving her. I drove her home after the noise started to park her. But I can’t figure it out. I did notice there was a hole in my valve covers, gonna replace them. There was still oil in her before I topped it off. Havnt started up since and I’m worried wanna just get her right.

Welcome,
Well I Guess By The Sound & The A/C Control I Can See in Video You Have a 05-09 Mustang V6???? I MERGED THREADS! Kc Admin Sounds Pretty Bad! Really Need More Info To Advise Other Than What I Heard Sounds Like a Shot Engine. KC |
Yep you’re right. And I hope not, what info do you need.? She still runs and starts and revs with no problem.
|
How about a Vid With The Hood Up Where you Can See Entire Engine. Let it idle For a Bit Then Bring it Up To About 1500 and Run A bit Then Some Slow Revs From Say Idle To 2000. Move The Camera From One Side To Center to Other Side So We Can Get a Better Perspective SLOWLY. Your Gonna Need a Helper. That is a Start! Some Vids on the Exhaust Note From the Rear Would Be Good. Same Rev Pattern. Like To See if You get Any Smoke if Oil Cap is Removed For a Bit as Well! How Many Miles on Car And Show The Hole You Were Talking About.
Meanwhile if Anybody With a 4.0 Has Heard This Kind of Noise Please Chime in! Oh and Are You Missing Wheel Studs & Lug Nuts? Need To Address That is So! Saw Pics in Other Post! I Merged Threads! KC Admin KC |
This Will Give You Some Good Info on the 4.0L Although Not in a Mustang. Basics are The Same.
I Highly Advise a Watch! He Has Other related 4.0L Info on Youtube as Well! KC https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...a2b467711a.jpg |
There is 163,000 miles on it. I’m gonna take the videos when the sun comes up so it’s a better view. I’m by myself so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find help or not to take a video while reving. But I’m gonna try. I’m not missing lug nuts or studs that’s the center hub caps covering them up in the pics.

That Break in The Valve Cover Makes Me Wonder if Something Cut Loose on the Inside and Knocked it Out!
Perhaps Something With The Cam Follower. KC |
How About This???
|
Im gonna take off the valve cover and see if I can see anything wrong. Hopefully something just came loose. Or it’s a rocker arm or something.
|
So I think the timing chain was rubbing this piece her but idk what it is. And I can’t get the cover off bcz this bolt is like seized and its holding in the bracket above the valve cover. And
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...9ca68bd1fa.jpg it’s starting to strip. Any suggestions.? https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/themust...596b262d0.jpeg |
Does that piece hold down the timing chain.? Im so confused what’s that from.?
|
Looks Like Timing Chain Guide. Valve Cover Really Should Be Replaced So Breaking it Further is Not a Total Loss. You Could Try Soaking Bolt With Some PB BLASTER and Try Again With a 6 Point Socket Tapped With A Hammer and You Don't Need That Bruiser On The COWL! OUCH.

I Think you are Heading Towards This!
KC |
Does that sit on the timing chain or inside the valve cover. Should I replace it.? Nvm I see it in the video!!!
|
Would I be cool to drive it until I get my ls3 in a few weeks if I take out the plastic parts that broke off. And I just put some steel seal on the inside of the valve cover as well as the outside where the hole is.? I don’t wanna put tomuch into this engine bcz I’m getting an ls3.?also any relatively cheap high hp high reving engines you guys recommend for my s197 base?
|
If You Don't Care if The Engine Goes. It Could Implode. I Just Don't Know. So Are You Saying You are Putting an LS3 in the Mustang? Sounds Like a Quite a Task . Engine Swaps in Later Cars Are Such a Pain!
KC |
I’m definitely gonna fix it before I swap it due to it being my daily driver. I’m thinking about just taking the engine out and fixing it and then just throwing it back in. But I’m gonna swap it. I’m just unsure of what to swap it with. I’m very indecisive. My brother says to swap it with a ls3. I just want something loud aggressive high horsepower and something I can constantly rev high.

The Electronics in These Cars Are Very Unforgiving With Change. Simply Swapping From One Year Engine The Same Size To Another Can Be a Can of Worms. I Highly Advise Getting Another Vehicle Equipped With a More Powerful Engine Out of The Gate. a 2011 Up Mustang With a 5.0 Might Be a Better Choice With Similar Styling. It Will Be Far Cheaper And Less Taxing Down The Road!
