Steering Issue
 

When I turn at low speeds I hear a low whine coming from the front wheels (I think). Also, when I go over a speed bump I can hear a squeek coming from the front suspension. It doesn't happen in the rear. Any ideas on what it can be, and is it a problem?

Does the same thing on mine. the low whine could be many things, but the two that come to mind are the rear axle (which there is a TSB out for), or more likely the power steering pump. If it whines only when the wheels are turned all the way or almost all the way, then it's the power steering pump and most cars do that. I don't know what's up with the squeak, but I'm insterested to see what you find out. See what the dealer says.

I have been watching this forum alot regarding this steering noise. Most people find out that it is thier rear axle which has the TSB.

But I can definitely tell you guys I have this noise your talking about in the front end. It is very noticable while I am pulling into my garage slowly with the radio volume turned down. It sounds like a rubbing muffled squeaking sound it almost sounds like maybe something in the steering column could be it. It is probably very difficult to diagnose. I think it would need to be on a lift with someone tiurning the wheel back and forth to track it down.

I had the axle problem and I solved that with some friction modifier. But this front end noise has be concerned. I have see a couple other threads regarding this same issue. I think one thread claimed replacing his steering rack solved his front end noise.

If they tell me they have to replace my steering rack I may just live with it! I don't think the yahoos would even have the slightest clue how to do it.

Sounds like we're dealing with the same problem. My stang is brand spanking new, and I my dealer has me coming back in at 3k for an oil change/fit and finish inspection. I'm definitely going to point the noise out to them.

I don't think I have the rear axle problem, because the noise I'm hearing is definitely coming from the front end.

Any updated news on this issue. I have the "squeak" as well.

Did you ever take your in for this noise yet? I haven't had a chance to. It has been Snowing for the last two months!

I have the exact same problem. When I make a slow u-turn with the steering wheel all the way in one direction it makes a weird noise and when I go over speed bumps the front squeeks while the back goes over solid and quiet.

Let me tell you -- replacing the steering system does NOTHING to help this issue. I crashed the Defiant into a tree last year and we had to replace the entire steering column. Now, unless my body shop really screwed something up or ripped me off, the "new" steering system is even worse than the old one. I've had the car in to Dan & Dan at Realspeed (hi guys!) and they realigned it when they lowered it about 6 months ago, and saw nothing horribly wrong with the car.

But, yeah, my front AND back end squeak when I go over bumps or turn sharply. I've got aftermarket springs, shocks, a beefier rear sway bar, and a Steeda strut tower support.

PS Random question (sorry to threadjack)... does anyone know where I can get a replacement adjuster for my Tokico shocks? Mine unscrewed itself and ran away from my keychain three days after I had the @#*&$% things installed.

Tungstallion, no haven't taken it in. Some cars just make noises like that, and it really doesn't bother me. now the driveline whine (tranny/diff) is another story

I dropped mine off at the dealership on Tuesday and they are working on it as we speak. I referenced this TSB 05-14-3.
Might have my car back tomorrow.

My car had a noise in the front end that ended up being the power steering rack. It was a moan/squeal that happened with every turn of the steering wheel, and it was obvious it was coming from the front when I listened in the wheel well and had someone else turn the steering wheel. The dealer replaced the rack and I haven't had any further noises at all. I've seen the same noise in Ford Escape's as well.

Well, I got my car back today and the sound is still there. :banghead:
TSB 05-14-3 isn't for our style of cars. So, they did the one where they replaced the clutch packs.

I don't know about the 05 and up Mustangs, but my '99 had an annoying squeek in the front end. It was dry tie rod ends. The factory ones didn't have any grease fittings and were supposedly permenently lubed. I replaced them with aftermarket ends and the problem went away. When we opened one of the factory ends, we could see that the permanent grease had separated from the contact area, thus causing the creaking. If there aren't any aftermaket ends available yet, grease fittings could be added to the stock ones by drilling and inserting a fitting to the factory ones. I could have saved a lot of money by going that route. An easier method for a temporary fix, is to inject oil through the rubber cover using a syringe. Its worth a try.

Just had mine fixed. It was the rack and pinion that had to be replaced.
