Group 48/H6. The battery to get if the 96R is just ticking you off for S197s.
Group 48/H6. The battery to get if the 96R is just ticking you off for S197s.
I was tired of the 96Rs dying in my car. Today, I did some research, and long story short, there is an alternative: Group 48/H6.
See this video:
Not mine. Now, it's not the bestest video ever, no. But the proof is right there, this big ol' battery with more CCAs will go right in, no issue. Fits like a glove. I now have proof.
It's not perfect, of course, but then I don't consider the 96R fitment awesome in the first place. '05-09's terminals/posts are flipped 180 from the 10-14s. This puts the positive terminal in a little more danger, probably why they flipped it around in 10-14. They apparently also use Group 96Rs.
But since everyone has a terminal cover on the positive post (right? RIGHT?) this shouldn't be any dangerousing going on, so I went ahead and threw a new H6 in there... the positive terminal/cable needed a little tweaking to get over far enough, but it fit just dandily. Mine's been shortened due to corrosion and a new terminal put on, so yours may just plonk on pretty as you please. Negative isn't an issue. And I don't care about no label facing correctly, so backwards it is.
As shown in the video, the hold down strap will need modding/replacing because it's too short with the new battery height. I just removed it from the clamp and tucked it behind the battery for now, I'll get a longer one Soon(tm), I'm sure. Clamp now clamps perfectly fine, battery's secure I'd say.
But there you go. An alternative to the 96R, more CCAs, and apparently so far as I've seen it's also a cheaper battery by like 1/3rd-ish, perhaps more, depending on Things(tm). So all that overalll makes me pretty happy with my new-to-me info I found today.
In case that helps anyone. Kibitz/berate away.
/I'm not sure it'll cure the dying... last two freezes have been brutal, but I've got a Plan(tm)... basically gonna just pull this thing out and keep it in the house if a freeze happens.
//Alternator seems happier though, I was getting weird spikes on my little monitor, those went away with this new battery... so that makes me happy too.
