Groan during low speed turning...the thread has disappeared!!!
Hey all,
Not long ago a TSB was posted for the rear axle whine during low speed turning. This was the one that required the replacement of the clutch packs. Anyone have it done and can someone please repost that TSB, I am taking mine in on Friday the 7th to have this fixed, and I want to go in armed!!

Debate's out I guess if adding the XL-3 is really the right solution, long term. But all I know is it worked for me and I didn't have to go to the dealer.

Here's the TSB: http://bradbarnett.net/mustangs/gala...axel_noise.pdf All the posts in the world won't help you get warranty service, but the TSB will. Had the same problem, took them two tries to get it right - but now it's all fixed.

I had this one done a couple of months back and no noise since.
Question for yall...I dont know if I have 2 different problems or if my problem is just this TSB
First thing is I can feel some binding and it makes a very low crumbling type sound, mostly when im backing out of a parking spot, like it was a truck in 4wd
The other thing it does is if I am making a slow turn with the wheel turned pretty much all the way it will make a much louder humming type of sound from the rear.
Are these 2 related or is there too differetn TSB's?

Just an update...Thanks to all TMS'ers again for making my life easy!!! I took it to the dealer with the TSB in hand, and 7 hours later, got my car back with new clutch packs and lubricant!!!!
Yeah, and the best part, total cost..$0.00!!!

I just added the friction modifier to my rear end, seems to have done the trick. I used some thread sealer on the plug, anyone know if the rear end grease will eat away at the sealer? I know brake fluid eats teflon tape, but not sure about the rear end grease. Also, noticed quite a bit of metal shavings attached to the magnetic plug. Normal???
I have around 23,000 on mine and the plug was filled with shavings. The magnetic shavings goop was kinda fun to play with, I must admit, but it worried me a little seeing all that metal in there.
If you want to avoid taking it to the dealer, just get a bottle of XL-3 (about $5 at the dealer) and put it in the differential yourself. takes about 15 minutes and totally fixed mine.
i just dont know if i care about fixing it. if it is just a little noise, then to mee there is nothing wrong. if this moaning is an actual issue with the car that could cause something to fail prematurely, then i'll fix it
I would recommend getting it fixed no matter. What is actually happening is the clutch plates are chattering as they slide along each other. Remember the old time clutches in an old pickup truck, when you let out the clutch and the thing lurches about 6 times real quick while the clutch is grabbing? that's what the clutches are doing in the rear end, except much quicker so it sounds like a groan. They are chattering, and over time they will wear chatter marks (grooves) into the face of the clutches, making them less effective and more likely to wear out faster. Once they wear out, the rear end will still work fine, but you will not have the "limited slip" it will be like a regular open rear end.
I have the automatic and I could have sworn I heard a groan as I was turning into my parking lot...I'm not sure I have the limited slip, either...I thought that was an option for '06 GT Automatics (I never saw it listed as an option on the window sticker). I now have 1,600 miles on the car. Is there a way to check to see if I have the limited slip axle (besides turning off the traction control and romping on the accelerator and seeing if I leave left and right treadmarks on the pavement)?
