Gas Cap
Yesterday I got into the car to go to work and when I start my car, the display screen says "Check Fuel Cap". So I get out, go to the back, and check the cap. It was loose. No big deal. I screw it into place and hit the reset button. I'm about halfway to work and the **** warning comes on again. I go all the way to work and park, then I check the cap... its tight! So this happens again when I go to start the car to come home and it keeps throwing the warning. Last night when I finally got home I undid the cap and checked it. No scratches, no cracks, the rubber ring around the top is not discolored or dented or torn or anything that would normally show a faulty ring.
So I'm completely baffled about this and was wondering if anyone had any ideas besides buying a new gas cap. And do I buy an aftermarket one or do I go to a dealership to get one? :dunno: |
I had the same thing go on with my 2001 Intrepid. all I had to do was remove the cap and put it back on. It was like there was a vaccuum or somrthing that would trigger that check engine light.

I did that several times. Unscrewed it, removed it, then screwed it back in and restarted the car. It still keeps doing it. And I noticed the filler neck moves a bit when I push on it. I'm sure I'm just beign paranoid now. lol.

Well if you get too paranoid then I can take the car off your hands.:heh::stirpot: |
lol! not that paranoid!
|
you'll need a new gas cap. you can probably get one from an auto parts store, which should do the trick, though I'd probably go for OEM replacement, just to be certain

I thought that all the 2010's came with that new capless fuel system? Or should this be in a different forum.
|
If I remember right, it takes several drive cycles for the message to go away. Keep driving it for a week, and if it doesn't go away after that, then look into a different cap.
|
they do, this is posted in the wrong forums
|
or, disconnect the battery once and then connect.
|
It was accidently posted in the wrong forum. Completely my fault and I ask any mod that sees this to move it. I apologize guys.
And theedge67, it did go away as it cycled itself out. |
no worries man :nice:
hope i didn't sound like a douche with my response lol |
Oh not at all! lol

Glad it worked itself out. I don't know why those sensors take a few cycles to reset, to me that is stupid. Why not just show the light when it is a problem, and as soon as it is not a problem, the light turns off? That would make sense though, so they couldn't do that....

With some new cars it requires the code to be cleared with a dealers scan tool...
|
Just a heads up, check the filler neck and tube. This happened on my explorer, and the tube had to be replaced.

Getting one in my 1998 GT. Gas cap is fine. Just replaced the fuel pump with a high volume pump, the filler neck seal and a sensor on the top of the tank. I don't know where to begin. Any way to run a pressure check and find the leak? I did bend one of the plastic hoses going to some external component that has to be an emissions gadget when reinstalling the tank. But it doesn't look cracked. There is a rubber hose adjacent the filler neck that looks pretty tired...maybe I'm answering my own questions. Any help appreciated.
