Fuel pump issues?

So I have a 2008 GT and for some reason my fuel gauge will work once I put gas then it’s stops working and just goes back and forth each time with an error message. And also after I put it maybe 7 gallons fuel starts to exit when the fuel pump is inserted and I have no idea why. Can someone please help??

Howdy! Welcome to the forums!

Ok, so... let's address the fill issue. Gas pumps, by and large, are too fast/pressurized for the filling system of the S197 Mustangs unless they've been modified. You'll hear things like charcoal canister's full, needs a new tank... no. It's the overall design, mostly the fuel fill tube itself. And there's more, just read about... The Method... and you'll not have the problem... although you can't be in a hurry unless you fix the problem of the fill tube and routing. https://themustangsource.com/forums/...7/#post7042899

As far as the gauge... it's most likely the fuel sender, that's on the right side of the tank. If both the message center and the gauge are going stupid, that's the most likely thing. That's not the ONLY thing, mind, it's the most likely. You'll need to remove the access cover and then do some testing before you'd want to take the sender out and replace it, if you ask me, but you could do the ol' parts cannon thing and toss a new sender in there and hope it's what it was.

If it's just the gauge going wonky, that could be the gauge itself, and would mean a couple of fixes... replacement of the entire instrument cluster with a known good one (which will probably require reprogramming at a dealer/someone who knows and has the tools) or replacement of just the one stepper motor on the gauge. Assuming that's what the problem is in the first place. It could be a chafed/corroded/grounded wire causing the issue. You really want to test the system than guess in this case, could wind up costing more shotgunning the fix.

If you're not wanting to do the testing and all that, or don't feel comfortable or whatever, then I'd say you need to take it somewhere to get the gauge issue fixed. The fill issue... eh. I've learned to be patient, only takes a couple minutes more to get a full pull.

Hope that helps!
