it appears next to and/or part of the a/c unit. a makeshift recharger? i say that 'cause it looks like a contraption i used to attach to the lines in a home unit to add freon to the unit.

It's a brake proportioning valve. It's needed when a rear disc conversion is done. It adjusts the brake bias front to rear. Turn the **** one way it puts more front brake in. Turn it the other way and you get more rear brake.

To verify the adjustment, find a safe place to get to speed and slam on the brakes. The fronts should lock up just before the backs lock up. If the backs lock up first, it could send you spinning.
Here's the wierd part: to delay braking to the rear brakes, you turn the proportioning valve counterclockwise.
