Skip Shift and Hill Start Assist
 

I just saw a video saying that the 2011 Mustang GT will have 1-4 skip shift. Is this new for 2011? If not, what year did this begin?

Also, do 2011 or earlier Mustangs have hill start assist, where it holds the brake for you? If so, can it be disabled?

Skip-shift is new for this year. Nothing I've seen/read mentions any sort of Hill Start Assist.

God, I hope that is the case. I loathe that feature.

I have hill start on my 08 BMW 328i..it actually saves the clutch. When I first got the car and I tried to get the car to go when on a incline I thought I had a sticking caliper..then I found out the car comes with hill start. I loathe the 1-4 skip shift...I was told there is software that can remove this..is this true?

Hill start assist is the worst idea ever for a car :mad:... My wife's '09 Jeep has it, luckily my '07 did not...

It only makes sense to have when in 4wd while off-road.

Been using the hand brake for years on those rare occasions when I think back roll may be excessive without it.

I've never used the hand brake and never bumped anyone. That being said I don't mind the hill start assist

As long as the HSA is defeatable, I'm fine with it. I live in flatland, so it's not a feature I'd use a lot, but don't want to deal with it if need be. If I'm somewhere where it's hilly, I'll turn it back on if it makes my life easier. I'm used to the handbrake trick or just a quick jump at an incline, so it's not an issue.

As I've said before about the 1-4 shift, they'll have the SS eliminators like they do for the GM 6-speed trans. out real quick, and they should be inexpensive.

I don't need Hill Start Assist. I actually know how to drive :D

My wife and I have hill start assist on our Jeep Liberty. And it's even an automatic, which makes it even dumber. I wouldn't mind it if it was transparent, but it's not. Annoys me to no end. I step on the gas, and the car just sits there for a moment, then lurches forward suddenly. I could see it being helpful to drivers new to manual transmissions, but at the same time, it also means they may never perfect their takeoffs on hills.

I think I could live with the skip shift, though that remains to be seen.

BMWs HSA is really good for the manuals, it all about how well the software is tuned. on a 3series manual you def dont really notice. in a manual as you are adding clutch on a hill you are used the car holding still a milli sec before it rolls forward it just doesnt roll backward with the HSA. cant speak to other brands but seeing how well ford seems to be executing as of late if they offered it i assume it would work pretty well.

Agreed, you barely notice it. My 328i is almost seemless, it just seems the brakes grab an extra second.

hill start assist sounds good though

There is no hill-assist feature for any of the S197 Mustangs prior to model year 2011, and there is nothing in the 2011 order guide which mentions this feature.

Dave, I'm pretty sure that it'll be VERY similar to the ones used for skip shift elimination on the GM 6-speed. Basically an intermediate pigtail that will fool the trans that the signal is (or isn't) there. It may be part of the ECU tuning, but that still remains to be seen.
