Seat Replacement/Airbag Light
 

I have a 2010 and I replaced the seat in the vehicle. They are stained and I'm rebuilding it. The airbag light came on. I ran it out to the dealer and they told me I would need to buy a new occupant sensor as the are vin'ed to the vehicle. I was told this sensor starts out at $750 and you get the bottom cushion and the sensor. I heard you can remove you original sensor from the older seat. Does anyone know to this can be done?

The dealer is correct... in as much as the sensor has to be scantool'd to work with the SRS. As far as its being VIN matched to the car (and therefore not able to be recoded to a 'new' car) I do not know, but I'd suspect so for legal reasons.

Feds require the airbag systems. They require those sensors. And since it's a sensitive, sue happy world regarding such things... doesn't surprise me at all the sensors and bags are VIN matched to the car and programmed...

So. I'd be putting your seat back in the car. Possibly considering moving the sensor into the new seat or something, but don't go jury-riggin' the thing. Do it right or just don't have an airbag for the time being. Not doing it right would be a very dumb thing to do, even if it seems 'smart' on the outset.

So maybe:

- Ask about the OCS system reset on the new seat, or
- Ask about installing your new cover on your old seat and doing the OCS system reset?
