Its not over 8% in all counties in CA.... the state takes 6.25% then the county tacks on their tax too, I think up in the central valley where I'm getting mine its 7.5 or 7.75%... something like that

Here in South Carolina ALL cars are capped with a $300 sales tax on vehicle purchases. You have to be a resident though. It is 5 or 6% but when it reaches $300, it is capped.

Sales guy called me this morning. I told him what I wanted. Naturally he hadn't heard of the Sonic Blue late availability but he's up to speed now. I told him what I wanted (401A/Comfort/EP/Auto), and he said he'd work it up and call me back. He said having my '11 parked until then was a plus in that I wouldn't be piling miles onto it.
I worked it up on Ford's web site Build & Price, and it looks to be about $38,500. I am guessing that after X-Plan it'll be closer to $35K. If I can get $33K or $34K for my car, then I'm only looking at a $2K or so difference.
Wild card: My wife is suddenly NOT behind this plan. She wants me to get a car I "can use" but doesn't think a GT is a good idea. She's probably right. I bet she wants me to get that 2011 Honda Fit we drove last week. It was a great little car with perfect steering and brakes and paddle shifters, that's for sure. But it's not a Mustang.

Tell she can drive one when the van croaks. You need your stang. It's like a little vacation everyday you drive. I doubt you'd get more than 30-31 for your car though. If you do, awesome.

Try to work it out with the wife somehow. Sure, you need her support, but mention how important a Mustang is to you. You are going to get better from a medical standpoint soon, so towards the end of the year the Honda FIT may not feel right to you. Do what you must, but I think a Mustang is the only car that you may really want!
Heres another idea.....Get a tricked out V-6 if you want in Sonic Blue and then the $$$$ issues will not be that severe and then your wife may be more accepting of the move when you talk about 31 MPG and less $$$$. Plus, you will still have an awesome Mustang

I think she'd be OK if I found a '10 coupe with the 5AT, but two problems with that are: no sonic blue, and how can you switch to the 4.6 once you've had the 5.0? The 4.6 is a great package and has a great sound tho. And I simply cannot warm up completely to the 05-09 interior.
Arrrgh, this is so irritating. Wish I had a suitable clutch leg. I have a Barton shifter bracket on the shelf that I purchased back when I thought I'd get over this foot thing quickly...

I'm with you on both points. I think the 4.6 conversion would be easier than switching to the 05-09 interior. It was great before the '10+ interior but after seeing the new interior it knocked an 05-09 off the radar.

Dealer got back to me with this for my proposed 2012:
MSRP = $38,520
x-plan = $36,023.91
LOL, I wonder if they'd take 36,023.90?

For a 2010?!?!?! Are they on dope? 2010's were selling for $7-8000 below msrp last summer. But I guess they just figured it with x-plan thinking you'd be dumb enough not to know.

be closer to 36k. The car I have on order is 38,600 msrp and x-plan is right at 36k I'd say your looking at your car and 5k to trade minimum. You have to factor in that the dealer has to be able to list the used car at a price thats attractive in the used market. Don't forget there are good rebates on 2011 mustangs (if you can find one) that automatically drive down the value of your trade. If your vert was 41k then x- plan was probaly right around 37,500 then you subtract rebates and your right at 35 or so on a brand new one so now you can see that 34k isn't realistic for trade in value. Not trying to be a downer just trying to be realistic.

I appreciate the notion, but that will never happen. My wife is my everything. And she will let me do this if I really want to. But she is much wiser than I am, so I always want to heed her counsel.

BLUE BOOK® TRADE-IN VALUE
Close Trade-In Value
Kelley Blue Book Trade-In Value is the amount consumers can expect to receive from a dealer for a trade-in vehicle, assuming an accurate appraisal of the vehicle's condition, mileage and features. This value will likely be less than the Private Party Value because the reselling dealer incurs the cost of safety inspections, reconditioning and other costs of doing business.

The "Private Party" are about $1500 higher.
All those handsome rebates are also available to me in my purchase so I see those as a net wash.
