3.73:1 is the shiznit! Mileage is not the best, but the power band is un frikn believable.... Worth the Mileage penalty? Maybe.

May I ask why you are changing gears that many times in that speed range? Are you doing that for fuel economy reasons?

I agree. But I've got 4.10's in my 05. I tend to play Alot. I literally just enjoy shifting gears. Even in the rents 11 I almost never drop below 2800 granny shifting it In the first few

a) with 3.55s you can shift into 6th at about 45 with no problems.

b) I shift 1-3-5-6, or if I get a rolling start, 2-4-6.

c) you bought a manual, and are then complaining about having to shift it?

d) getting 3.31s is not the solution. Learn how to drive a manual more efficiently.

Not sure why that would be. I have driven mayn cars like that over the years. Unless I am on a steep incline in my GT with 3.73, I alway start in 2nd. 2nd in this car is better then 1st in most cars. Since you can go all the way to 60 there is no need to shift until you are at a comfortable speed. F the rpms.

I'm in the same boat as the OP for my commute to work. Shifting gears is not onerous, it's driving the car.

My preference is to get up to speed using 1, 2, and sometimes 3... cruise in 5 or 6, dropping into 4 when needed to climb hills or accelerate. The car seems perfectly happy to cruise at 1K RPM on level ground.

[I've only driven the manual transmission: test drove a '10 for a few minutes, and my '11 upon delivery. I'd be very curious to experience an '11 automatic transmission, especially one with a good tune.]

Do the math.
In 4th at 2K the speed difference is only 2.5 MPH..

RPM's At 70 MPH in 6th:
3.31 = 1874
3.55 = 2009
3.73 = 2111

Won't hurt the tranny, it just means more clutch slippage and thus theoretically faster clutch wear. I wouldn't do it as a habit but it's no biggie to do it some of the time. My opinion.

But seriously, the O.P should have just gotten an automatic if shifting the gears is too burdensome or if he is in traffic a lot.

^This.

The OP should try driving my current car (2004 Subaru Forester XT). I have driven it in stop-and-go traffic every day for the past 7 years. Sloppy, vague, rubbery, high-effort shifter with an impossibly stiff, stupid clutch.

The 2011 GT manual I test drove WAS like driving an automatic by comparison!!

The ratio for second, especially with the 3.73 rear is equal or better to most other cars. I doubt starting in 2nd everytime would shorten clutch life at all.

I've got the 3.31 axle. If I'm driving in town and can't accelerate quickly anyway, I typically just go 1-3-5.

In a 373 it has a low...ish top Soren in 1st, and 2nd is faster then everyday cars flat out can do, there is more then enough power to begin in 2nd

As the OP, I appreciate the comments, including those that seem slightly critical.

I love shifting this car and wouldn't have dreamed of buying an auto trans. But it does get a bit tiresome on the commute where I face 11 traffic lights in a 10-mile drive.

Admittedly, in recent weeks I've been trying to better my MPG, with gas at $4 a gallon around here, which accounts for me shifting at lower RPM. After reading some of the replies here last night, I drove home determined to not worry about MPG and shift no earlier than 3,000. To my surprise, I got the same mileage, so it seems that shifting early and often, as I was doing, wasn't helping me (and I wasn't enjoying the car as much). So I'm changing my strategy.

Quick Reply: Maybe buying the 3.55 was a mistake
