Looking into buying a '14 with mods, opinions?

I've been wondering the forum for a while and the time is getting close for me to make a purchase of my own but I'm hoping to get your help.

I'm trying to decide between getting a new or low mile 13/14 GT or just place an order for a 15. If I go with a 13/14 its gotta be a GT premium with Recaros, trac pack, and navigation... but finding one in that exact configuration in either DIB or Black is getting interesting. I found one 1000 miles away with those options but it has quite a few mods that from my research sound like everything was done right but I wanted to get a few opinions from people who have been in the game longer than I.

Here is a quote from the ad:
"GT Premium with factory Track Pack, Deep impact blue, Recaro seats, 3.73 gear ratio, 6 speed manual, factory installed side louvers and window louvers, factory installed California special spoiler, Brembo break package, 8 speaker sound system, navigation package, XM radio capable. Modifications done to the car. The best mods have been done to the car, nothing cheap. All mods have been professionally installed by an expert Mustang mechanic. Mods include: Roush axle back exhaust, Pypes off road h-pipe, H&R super sport lowering springs, Koni yellow sport shocks and struts (front and back), Team Z complete rear end kit (lower control arms, upper control arms, relocation brackets), Drive Shaft Shop aluminum one piece drive shaft, Airaid Cold Air Intake, MGW short shifter, hood struts, JLT passenger side oil separator, MM caster camber plates, J&M adjustable pan hard bar, LED map lights, license plate lights, and trunk light, Steeda bumpsteer and ball joint kit, Tuned and comes with tuner. All mods are perfectly set up for any future power mods such as a supercharger or turbo kit. Car has never seen snow and has only seen rain 3 or 4 times. Always garaged. Non-smoker. Well maintained car, always kept clean and washed. Comes with all of the stock parts that came with the car."

The price is right on track for a mustang with their miles and options, so they're not wanting more from the mods. The photos look great and I haven't contacted them yet. My biggest concern is getting into a Mustang that has been beaten on, which is pushing me into getting a new one. I'm planning on holding onto this car for a long time and don't need any problems. Any opinions?

And what's the price that they are asking?

If the price is agreeable with you (and in line with Edmunds, KBB, etc.), it sounds like the car was tastefully (and practically) modded. Since one usually doesn't recoup the money spent on modifications, you could benefit from someone else's efforts/expense.

Interested to know why the car is being sold, however...

Differences between 2014 and 2015s aside, at this particular point in time you will probably get more value for your money with a 2014 (if for no other reason than someone else has taken the initial depreciation hit).

Plus you have to make a decision which car you'd be happier with. This comes down to your personal preference on which style you like more.

I like the '15s but this is a tough decision.

From what you've said though, "My biggest concern is getting into a Mustang that has been beaten on, which is pushing me into getting a new one. I'm planning on holding onto this car for a long time and don't need any problems," I'd suggest a new one. Yes to depreciation but yes to new warranty and NO chance of beaten on.

It's a fresh model with some cool new features. Plus, ugh, that nice new interior and interior smell!

If you have the money, New.
If you have plenty of money, New + Performance Pack & Recaros.
If you have more than plenty of money, GT350.

The tune is the only thing that would concern me. No factory warranty in that case if engine issues arise. That's why I don't plan on tuning mine anytime soon. The rest of the modifications are pretty much in line with what I would do... Not concerning.

Some cars i would have no issue buying used. Sports cars I am more cautious on. Hard or impossible to know the history of the car and driver.

Welcome to TMS

Sounds like you’re on the fence ... personally I’d go with a new 2015 ordered with the options that you want, then you only have to deal with the Ford warranty, TSB’s and recalls. Your favorite appearance and/or performance modifications can always be added later on. Otherwise it’s going to be a Las Vegas style crap shoot - unless you know the ‘14 or the owner.

I'd wonder why someone who dumped that much money into a '14 is getting rid of it so quick.

Maybe it had the wheels ripped off and $10k in damage including paint and body work done to the car in the first few thousand miles and is now looking to unload.

Personally I'd never buy a newish car that's been modded, especially a sporty car. 1 because of warranty and that is a lot of money to be holding the bag on and 2 because modded cars are much more likely to have been beaten on.

And I sure wouldn't buy one from someone that doesn't know the difference between Brembo breaks and Brembo brakes.

After F1's Lewis Hamilton's Brembo's exploded, he would probably approve of the first description.

Pictured above is the moment Lewis Hamilton lost the German GP to Nico Rosberg. During Q1, Hamilton's W05 suddenly spun when braking into the banked Sachs corner, and he ended up hitting the tire wall rear first with a force of 21g. Not pretty, but how come?

It was evident from onboard footage that something went wrong with the brakes. The front right spit out a bit of black dust before sending the car out for a spin. The reason: Brembo brake rotors.

Go new......just my opinion, I would never buy a used sports car unless I knew the guy/gal that owned it and how they drove it and took care of it.....again, just me. Plus I do love the new car smell!!!!

I think 1000 miles is way to far to look at a used GT.

The warranty concern would be a big concern for me. With all the mods, there is a chance it was beat on a bit - and no warranty to fall back on if there are problems (could be why it is for sale).

I agree with a lot of what all of you are saying, I saw it as a great way to get into a 14 with mods for $32k. But when it all comes down to it I don't know how its been treated or why the mods have been performed. Plus I really don't like the warranty (or lack of) part.

I like the 14's and really like the incentives Ford is offering, but I can't find one with the options I want. So it sounds like a 15 will be in my near future

I would go new. My car was in a bad accident at only 300 miles. Hit by a drunk driver, still not showing on a car fax... If you were buying my used car you would be getting a car that was nearly totaled without knowing.

Every car I have modified I have beat the living day louts out of it. I don't know many people who don't modify their cars and beat on them at least a little a bit. For $32k you have options.

By the way I have a 2014 mustang for sale. Lots of tasteful mods... ;-)

Aren't all Mustangs beat on? These cars aren't really that fun to drive if you aren't accelerating hard. Its not like they are nimble, lightweight "driver's cars".

They are built to be beat on...strong V8, manual transmission, and a solid rear axle...

Getting on a car and beating on it are 2 entirely different things.....and no, mine has not been beat on.
