How far is your commute to work everyday?

I'm about to start a new job that is 25 miles from my home 1 way. I have the 2012 GT and the MPG is poor especially when there is traffic. I'm going to be driving 50 miles everyday to and from work. I need your opinion about something...so I looked into the 2015 4 cylinder turbo Mustang which will probably get 32 mpg high way. My car is worth about $21,000, a new 2015 4 cylinder with the options I want is priced at $34,000 mrsp. My car is 3 years old, Bought it April of 2011. What do you think is the best option for me? and how far is your commute to work 1 way?

16 miles one way, 12 traffic lights. There are three stretches over 3 miles each with no traffic lights and maybe a mile or so between two others. If they would just synchronize the ones close together, it would be a nice cruise. I average 23+ when I stay out of it for the most part.

80% high way, 20% city. There are probably about 8-10 traffic lights total.

Mine is 29 miles one way to work. It's a combo of city and highway miles. I average about 20mpg. I spend about $300/month on gas. My first choice was the Shelby. For various reasons, I went with the GT. The people insisting on the Shelby forums that they avg 24-26 mpg make me laugh. I have NEVER seen 26 mpg with the GT. But... It's worth it imo. If I'm going to spend that much time in a car, it needs to be a fun car!

I just got my 14 gt manual with 3.73 gears last week and have been averaged right around 15 mpg on my commute, that said it's probably 50/50 highway and city with a lot of start and stop in there driving around a resort. I came from a focus st getting 27ish combined on 93 octane so this is definitely going to take getting used to, that said this thing is brand new and will break in... I was averaging 22 in my ST the first few tanks.

Hopefully it breaks in quick, I'm okay with 20 mpg combined... 15 is pretty turrible.

As for your decision, I wouldn't be opposed to the 2015 2.3 EB, my focus st was loads of fun with the 2.0, very torquey. Hopefully the 2.3 sounds better out of the pipes, but the sound symposer sounds pretty good in cabin. I will say that the 2.0 in the focus (a lighter car with more efficient FWD) maxed out at about 30-32 mpg for me on the highway, the best tank being 29 mpg... So there's no way in hell a 2.3 mustang will see 32 highway for any real world length of time. I would say it would probably be good for a combined 25 mpg, which is pretty solid for all the torque and power it will have over a v6.

$13k buys a lot of gas.

My commute is 14 miles each way of heavy stop and go traffic, and I get 21.3 mpg with 80% of that and 20% regular driving in my GT.

seriously outweigh the pros and cons to keeping your GT and paying a bit more for fuel VS trading it and getting the new ecoboost mustang.

IF you drove very cautiously meaning easy acceleration let the car roll more to a complete stop VS making quick stops, I'm fairly confident that the fuel savings between the ecoboost and the GT would be marginal, I highly doubt that the fuel savings would really save you that much more where you would actually notice you saving money on gas. I would imagine, the trade in of your GT for a 2015 would be more of an impact on your finances than the additional difference in fuel savings from your GT and the 2015 ecoboost model.

Sounds like you have a tough decision on your hands and good luck with what you decide! turbo charged or not.... I would personally never did like the thought of owning a muscle car, sporting a 4 banger engine. not even it is slightly faster than my 2014 v6 model.

oh sorry. I drive about 40KM one way. mind you. the V6 is slightly better than the GT but... .... i still have a fairly heavy foot, enjoying this new car

also bare in mind. what would happen if you did get rid of the GT and got the new mustang you're talking about. and then you either lost your job or hated your job and quit.... would you have any regrets letting go of your GT?

My commute is 1156 miles door to door...

Don't drive the Mustang though, drive my F250 PowerStroke, about 21 mpg going up and about 11-12 mpg coming back.

Buying the new car will cost more than the extra gas.

76 Miles round trip. No complaints with gas mileage. I average 22-26 depending if I do 65 the whole way or 80. I always have a smile on my face driving my car..wouldn't have it any other way.

The added fuel was only part of the decision. Shelby + Winter was another reason. I would have to have a second car as a beater. Added insurance, which in NJ is among the highest in the country. Then to top it off, wife lost her job right around expected delivery of the Shelby. Sooo... I'll buy a used one in a few years and keep it in the garage for the weekends

To the OP, I'd keep the GT. The added gas cost is probably still less than the cost of getting the new car. This is open to debate, but I also think your car looks better than the 2015.

45 miles, one way. I drove my supercharged 2006 convertible every day. The 2013 I started out driving every day and then last year picked up a 2010 Mariner with AWD and a 4 cylinder. Gets a little better gas mileage than the Mustang but not as much fun to drive.

58 miles each way. I also "splurge" on premium gas for my 93 tune. I get 24.5 mpg almost all highway @ 75mph.

New car usually means additional sales tax, property tax, insurance etc. Like others have said you can buy a lot of gas for all of the outlays to switch.

People tell me they can't believe I am driving a brand new Mustang to a shipyard but that is the whole reason I bought it, so I could drive it every day on the way to work and have some fun doing it. My Trans Am will never see the shipyard parking lot though.
