How do people get such high MPG with their mustang GT?

According to what people post, they are getting 27mpg on the high way, 24, combined, 20 city, etc. According to the computer it says I'm getting 13.4 MPG. You know, the screen that comes up when you keep pressing the info button on the right driver's side. I just put $20 worth of gas 93 octane today and the gas light is on once again. I shift at 3 or 3.5k rpm. How do people get such high miles per gallon from their GT?

First thing to remember is that its the internet, and you should always believe everything you read on the internet.

Check it manually and see what you are actually getting.

I drive about 90% city & 10% highway. Very spirited driving. Typically 15-16 mpg. However, on long highway trips it is very easy to get 24-27 mpg, depending on speed and topography.

#1 is that the fuel economy dash readout is always short on these cars. Do a manual calculation on a tankful of gas and you will see.

#2 is that for best economy you have to drive very soft and short shift, 3K to 3.5K shifting isn't going to get you there.

#3 is, $20 of gas??? So, you don't fill it up when you buy gas?

I average about 15 mpg and thats enjoying the drive with alittle spirited driving. Now if you granny it and keep the RPM low you can get better numbers but you won't enjoy the mustang as it should be enjoyed. Stop looking at the gas meter and just enjoy the car.

1. I love the term 'spirited'

2. Dont get a jetski to drive like a yacht, and dont get a mustang to drive like a prius

I am getting 17.9 city right now. I shift at 2200-2600 rpm. I am light on the gas. I do however give it alot of gas every now and then. My car has less then 1900 miles. I have only been able to get 26 mpg when I was driving 100% highway. I also have a talent for giving the car just enough gas to keep speed which is always about 5-11mph over the limit.

The most important trick is to get into the highest possible gear, as soon as possible. A significant percentage of fuel consumption from an internal combustion engine is from internal friction...the higher the RPM, the greater the friction that needs to be overcome with energy from your fuel.

I drive my car pretty hard, but only sporadically. When I'm not "on it" I tend to short shift a lot...and I'm always in 6th gear so long as I'm not lugging the motor...that combined with keeping the speeds under 80mph on the highway will net you some reasonable mileage.

According to my aCar app on my Droid phone (great ap...) I'm averaging about 22mpg over my 8,600 miles. My best was just shy of 26mpg, my worst was 16mpg.

What are these "miles per gallon" everyone is talking about?

Isn't your car supposed to be based on "smiles per gallon"?

When I drive like I normally do, I average 15.5mpg. Intake and tune. When I drive like a normal person, I can get it up to 19mpg. Also, staying under 65 makes a huge difference in gas mileage on these cars. They aren't all that aerodynamic.

Highway only, doing 60mph for 100 miles, I got 26mpg in topography that varied by 700' from start to finish. Same trip, doing 75, I got 23mpg. Same trip, driving like I normally do, I got 19mpg. These are all figured using manual calculations.

I bought this car to drive it like it was meant to be driven. Consequently, I expect somewhere between 15-16mpg over all on a tank.

I used to get 26-28mpg on my car with 3.31's on the way to work...
Cruise control at 60-65 the whole way and drive smooth, it's not a myth.
I can't get good mileage with 4.10's now though I see 20-23 on the same trip.

I have been able to get 26 in my brembo 3.73, if I stop paying attention for even a second and drive a tad more spirited it goes down fast, over all I get around 18-19 avg according to the dash
