Hit in the rear!

So I got hit in the rear yesterday. Any experiences with repair or replacement of rear bumper? Photos don't show but I'm wondering if the bumper supports are damaged or possibly some of the clips. Rear bumper is loose now. Any help would be appreciated.

Aw that sucks. Did you get who hit you and make a claim so the insurance will fix it. My last mustang got hit just like that in a parking lot, but because I couldn't prove 100% who did it I was out of luck.

Sorry to hear David. The insurance adjuster will assess the damage, and will also leave the estimate open in case there is unseen damage. The shop that repairs your car will call the insurance company if anything else is needed. Not to worry, they can fix it, and you won't be able to tell it was ever damaged. Good luck.

Also, many insurance companies contract with body shops. All that is needed if you chose one of these shops, is drop the car off. The shop will take care of everything else.

Ya the guy who hit me spoke no English and had no drivers license. He did have an old insurance card for some no name insurance company and I did make a claim with that company and mine, but it's the weekend so we will see what happens Monday. I know how the insurance game works, but I'm more interested in repair options or if the whole bumper has to be replaced. It looks like the whole bumper is held in by clips so I'm sure some are broke. Since that rear bumper is plastic can it even be repaired right?

Man sorry to hear/see that! I would push for a new bumper and paint! My '08 GT got backed into and it has a nice size dent in the front drivers quarter panel. The body shop I like to side said since it's such a new car (at the time it was new) there's no need to try to repair it. Just get a new one, paint it and you come out to about the same price.

That's bumpers dented. Not even Sanford and Son would try to pop that out and repaint. They will get a new bumper, new clips, repaint and reinstall. It could have been worse. I speak from my experience with low life hit and runs.

At least he stuck around.

That's definitely true during Christmas time someone pulled in/out of the spot next to my passenger side and broke of my mirror and damaged my door, left no note or anything. Had to pay deductible out of pocket and parking lot had no cameras, (no pictures other than by the insurance company, couldn't stand the sight of it) Definitely wish you the best though and hopefully a fast turn around time.

Man, I feel your pain. My car was in an accident a few months ago.

The rear bumper is extremely easy to remove. I removed mine when installing my new exhaust. It shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the feed back everyone. Ya the guy who hit me was thinking of running I'm pretty sure. Me and my girl got out and started to take photos of him his car the plates and I made him get out and turn off his truck so there was not gonna be any GTA actions. Police cuffed him up pretty quickly. Lol the police dispatcher told me he was a mustang guy and had the police out pretty quickly. Good to be a mustang owner .....

You're lucky. Our family car, a cx9 just got rear ended the other day but Las Vegas has this new law that just started where police will not come to Fender benders or any accident where there is not serious injury. It's compete bull. I've had someone give me fake info before and got stuck with the bill. This guys stuff seemed legit, but I hate this law, especially because insurance companies usually want a police report.

Good luck with repairs!

They're just styrofoam pads under the bumper skin

Depending on how much they replace... you could have the body shop replace the rear bumper with a GT500/Boss/CS one... Last time I used insurance, the insurance wrote the body shop a check for the estimate they made, and then the body shop could, sort of, use it how I wanted.

I just had my car rear ended back during christmas. The things I did that helped with the insurance claims was getting the police to come out and write a report (3rd party witness) and filed a claim with both his and my insurance company right after getting home.

One thing I am currently still working on is getting my diminished value check. The insurance company does not want to pay your diminished value check because they believe when your car is repaired everyone is square. This is a load of crap and they know it too. As long as you weren't at fault for the accident you are entitled to diminished value. What you will need though is another 3rd party diminished value appraiser to come out and inspect the car to determine its lost value. If you can, have them out to look at it before and after the repair. Also, make sure to hire an appraiser who actually comes out in person as the insurance companies don't take seriously the $100 reports from companies that quote over the internet.

TLDR: Accidents suck, document everything and get an appriasal of your diminished value ASAP especially if your car was brand new like mine.

Thanks for the heads up about the diminished value claim. I was wondering how I should approach that portion. I got a very Bs quick drive in estimate from my insurance and I'm gonna hit a dealership body shop this week. I'll find out if they will give me a value before and after repairs and then I have to find out If the ******* who hit me has any insurance or ill have to use my uninsured motorist insurance. I'm really curious how much this minor bumper damage has devalued my mustang.

The issue I had when my truck was rear-ended was the lady that hit me had her insurance adjuster come out and said we will use a used bumper from another truck from a salvage yard and have it painted. I refused that. my truck was less than 2 months old. My insurance coverage stated new parts only so that is what I wanted from hers as well. Since I saw her texting as she was driving up and about to hit me...... she finally caved and she bought the new bumper so i wouldn't tell the cops she was texting and driving.

Moral of the story....be sure you know what parts (OEM or aftermarket) and from where they are coming from that will go on your car.

biggest thing on a minor damage diminished value, is it will pop up on a carfax.

hopefully paint match will be ok, its rarely ever perfect... honestly, I think i'd take a MINOR paint mismatch over a blend, just because I tend to keep cars forever...seen quite a few blend jobs fade unevenly years later.

you *might* find a take-off bumper in factory baked paint with a near perfect match- cheaper than a new repaint too...
heres one on ebay:

edit- oops wrong year...
