Full Sized Spare Mount
Anyone out there have a solution for mounting a full sized spare in the trunk when the spare tire does not fit in the wheel well?
I have bought a full sized spare that matches my wheels & tire size. Very glad to have it. It does chew-up a lot of trunk space, but I can live with that. Will make the next road trip less of a worry. Got a tire tote cover to keep things tidy. Really like the cover, cheap and very effective. Does a great job of protecting the trunk liner carpet and keeping the tire black off everything. Also should make it nicer to get the tire in and out of the trunk.
Now I just need to find a good easy way to secure the tire... Do not like it floating around back there, and also do not want it to become a missile if something bad happens. Besides that it moves around just running around town.
So, I have been thinking about good ways to tie the thing down. Thought about having someone weld a loop to the floor, like the one in the wheel well, and using the regular Ford hardware to bolt it down. Also been toying with some nylon tire straps, but not sure I like that one. So before I pull the trigger on something I thought I throw this out and see if there were any other good ideas from the community to put in a clean, easy to use, mount solution. Got any ideas or installs you would like to share?

Why worry with the full size tire?
Get a shorter tire that will let it fit in the well, then if you need it in an emergency you just use it for the short distance to the tire store to get the flat fixed or replaced.

I prefer full size spares. My last vehicle had a full size spare and it came in handy on a few occasions. I do a lot of highway driving and I wouldn't trust a mini spare for that. I see too many idiots doing 80 with their mini spare on the front of a vehicle. Scary.
Anyway, as far as bolting it down, I've got no ideas. Does it fit in the spare tire well or is it on top of the trunk mat?

It is a little over 1/2 an inch too tall to go into the wheel well. So right now it sits on top of the trunk mat. Eats a lot of trunk space too, but I am glad to have it.

What if you put it in the spare tire well anyway and just put the trunk mat on top of it? The trunk mats have a cardboard or wood backing don't they? Something to keep it firm. Maybe make some spaces to put around the edges around the tire.
Or do you mean too tall as in the diameter of the tire is too large to even fit in the hole?

Ordered the cargo net through the Ford dealer. It is a Ford accessory. It is like this one...

Diameter of the tire is over 27.5 inches and so it won't go very far into the hole. Tried to see if it would fit, but it sticks up about 9+ inches above the trunk floor.

I will give that a try. Seems like a lot of ground to make up to get it in a tight space, but we will check it out.
Here is why I got a full sized spare...

Well, dropped the tire pressure down to 8lbs and it goes a little bit further into the well, but not far enough. Still more tire out than in. This will not work with this size tire. 275/35R20...

full size spare
Got this wheel: http://www.americanmuscle.com/black-amr-18x8-0513.html
I fitted a 225/50R18 tire to this wheel and it fits in the trunk space just fine. Just an FYI: If your mustang is lowered make sure you get a jack that is lower than 4 inches when compressed so it will fit under the side skirts with a flat tire.

I have a full size spare tire which I negotiated it at the time of purchasing the car. It is not matching but it is full size. Although it is an 18" but it clears my Brembo calipers and it only come up less than an inch above the trunk floor. Basically I didn't lose any trunk space. I like to have a full size spare since I don't like to be forced to pay for a tire at any price at any tire shop if I get a non-repairable flat. This is beside the fact that I travel a lot and I like to feel that I can go more than 50 miles with the repair kit.

Do the rear seats on a coupe fold down? Since they're pretty useless, at least on my convertible, why not display a full sized spare (with wheel and/or a tire cover) ala '65 Shelby style? You could use the spare tire well to keep tools, detailing kit, and other things out of sight and keep your trunk space nice and clean.
