Forced to Shop for New Rims

Now shopping for new rims for our V6, after less than 17,000 miles and 21 months of use, the chrome finish on two of our rims has started to bubble near the center hub. The manufacturer has discontinued the rims and can only offer a discount on rims of another size. Since I am not ready to replace tires at this time changing rims size is not an option. Very disappointed these rims did not last longer. They were even removed and stored for winter to protect from harsh weather. :(

who is the manufacturer? Pics of the bad wheels please. Were they expensive?

GrnT 1/6/15 06:00 PM

Yes who are they made by?

You have the stock wheels still? I'd just have them refinished locally. Maybe do a black chrome or different finish this time...

You really love that black chrome don't you?

You push it like meth dealer at a preschool

Four out of five meth addicted presoolers would agree, black chrome is the best thing going.

Yeah some businesses will even repair the wheels right on the car in some cases.

I do still have the stock wheels, they are my winter set. Refinishing might be a possibility. Won't do regular chrome again, too fragile I guess. Thinking of the 2010 GT500 vert rims. Price on those seems very reasonable.

I like your current wheels better. Go crazy, do some kind of different finish - idk, gloss black lips with machined aluminum centers, something like that?...

Or black chrome...:poke:

JeffreyDJ 1/6/15 11:59 PM

Definitely check into refinishing. I'd also advocate for black chrome :p

chrome is good and strong when done properly and will last a long long time. So many cheap wheel manufacturers out there. Looks good for as yr or two then they are worthless

Did you have the MCA wheels? You can probably find some factory wheels used on craigslist or the forum. I posted mine for $700 with brand new tires and they sat there for months. Ended up letting them go for $400. Factory rims really have no value. People are always selling them for super cheap.

Ha, you must not be in California. Super cheap are not even words here, lol.

I like the MCA wheels but I need 18 x 9.5. Still considering the 2010 GT500, correct size and reasonable price is attractive. Better quality too, I hope

Anyone have an idea on the cost of refinishing?

Depends on your location. Can be anywhere from $250-1000...and depends on the finish or if you have them painted/powdercoated etc. An acid dip and powdercoat would actually be cheapest and most durable...

This.

Chrome only becomes an issue when the manufacturer cuts corners in the dipping process or goes thin on coats which can cause rust-through issues.

Order placed for new rims! Went with 2010 GT500's. Stayed at 18 x 9.5 to reuse current tires and hopefully better quality with Ford Racing!!!

Good choice. What size tires? 285/35/18?
