Everything you need to know about the bremo brake package

What is the Brembo Brake Package?
The 5.0 returned to the Ford Mustang in the 2011 model Year, except this time it would come in the form of an all aluminum 4 cam, 32 valve motor that puts out 412 Horsepower, which is almost twice as much as the original push rod 5.0 we have loved between 1987-1995. With all this new found power, it was only natural to tune the suspension and add major stopping power. Hence, option 55D, or better known as the "Brembo Brake Package".

However, much confusion has been made as to what the "Brembo Brake Package" really consist of. The Brembo Brake Package was and is only offered on 6 speed manual transmission GTs. The official Ford Buyers guide list the option as nothing more than a brakes, wheels, tires. When one looks at part numbers on FordParts.com, you might see that all the mustangs models have the same part numbers listed, however the differences can only be detected by price and description, not part number. For this reason one must speak to Ford Parts Counter Person to get the actual extension numbers. If that's not confusing enough, you also have a whole global community of people on the internet posting ideas, theories and nonsense about what the "package" really consist of.

Because of all this confusion, it became easier for people to believe that the "Brembo Brake Package" (aka Option 55D) was just the addition of the Brakes and 19" Wheels and Tires, however, in really it is much more than that. Lets take a closer look.

First,we need to look at what a normal 2011-12 GT shares with a Brembo Mustang:

Part Specifications that ALL 2011-12 Mustang GTs come standard with including the Brembo Mustang:
Rear: 11.8" Vented Rotors with 1-Piston Calipers
Sway Bars ( 34.6mm Front/ 24mm Rear)
Strut Bar Brace
Higher Durometer Rubber Bushings

Second, lets look at what a standard 2011-12 Mustang GT does not have, that a Brembo Mustang does;

The (55D) Brembo Brake Package includes the following:

Front: 14" Brembo® Vented Rotors with Brembo® 4-Piston Calipers
19 x 9.0-inch dark-stainless premium painted aluminum wheels
255/40R19 Pirelli PZero Summer-Only (Coupe) or P255/40ZR19 Goodyear F1 Supercar (Convertible)
Different Springs (131lbs Front / 167lbs Rear)
Different Struts/ Shocks (tuned for spring rates)
GT-500 Rear Lower Control Arms ( Higher Durometer Rubber)
Unique Electronic Stability Control® (ESC) Tuning
Unique Sport Steering Control Setting (EPAS)
Tire Mobility Kit Replaces Spare Tire

Ford downplayed many of these features of the package, and didn't make a detailed list of it, probably because they wanted people to focus on the upcoming 2012 BOSS 302. Why? The answer is simple, if one takes a base Mustang GT in the 300A Rapid Spec (plain like the the 2012 Boss 302, without comfort and electronic packages ), and adds the Brembo Brake Package and the optional 3:73 gears, they **** near have the same car for as little as $29,500. The 2012 Boss 302 stars at a MSRP of $42,000 ( it you can get it that cheap) and only comes with just 30 more Horsepower, manually adjustable shocks, slightly higher spring rates, a larger rear sway bar, and staggered size tires.

A true performance enthusiast would have to question, "is it worth it ?". Other then the fact that the Boss name has superstar celebrity appeal and racing history behind it, could an enthusiast justify the $12,000+ (or more) price difference? Seems hard to justify, considering that if you wanted to out perform the Boss 302 you could easily add 100+ horsepower to your "stock" 5.0 engine with a bolt on supercharger and upgrade the suspension with very little and still have an extra $6,000 in your pocket. For these reasons, Ford may have thought that this scenario could easily cut in the Boss 302 sales.

Ironically, for the 2013 Boss 302, Ford has decided to add comfort and electronic packages as options because some buyers have complained that the 2012 Boss 302 is too race like and plain. I guess, sometimes people forget what Boss 302 performance is about.

Do the Brembo Mustangs have the same "spring rates" as Standard GTs or Boss 302s?

They do not! They have their very own spring rates and part numbers. See the comparisons below:

Brembo

Is the Brembo Brake Package Mustang a "Special Edition"?
There really is some argument to this because none of the Mustang Forums consider this a special mustang, but if you look at the numbers the argument could easily be made that it in fact is. In March 2011, I contacted Ford Motor Company and asked for a "2011 Mustang Model Take Report" which showed the breakdown of Mustangs by Options and Models. I posted this info to several Mustang Forms to be shared with other Mustang enthusiasts. What I was able to calculate, was out of 26,422 Mustang GTs made in the 2011 Model Year, only a total of 4,601 Brembo Brake Mustang GTs were made. Percentage wise, of the 21,296 GT Coupes made only 19.05% came with the Brembo Brake Package. Of the 5,126 GT Convertibles made only 10.61% came with the Brembo Brake Package. The Breakdown of the Brembo Mustangs was 4,057 Coupes and 544 Convertibles. If you compare these numbers to the 5,026 Shelby GT500s made in 2011 Model Year, it becomes very clear the Brembo Mustang is in fact a "special edition" with not to many of them out there. Not to mention the final fact, out of 68,650 Mustangs (all model) of the 2011 Model Year, only 6.70% were Brembo Brake Package Mustangs.

Rapid Specs

All Brembo Mustangs came standard with the above described 55D option (aka Brembo Brake Package) and the following standard features listed in the table below:

You really need to look closer to the engine differences between the GT & the Boss. You're not quite as close as you think.

granted the engines are different, but the rest isn't so different.

I love the Boss, but my GT is no Boss.

Close enough to consider a Track Pack car as a BOSS Jr. :nice: :D

And my Brembo - 3.73 car is a Track Pack Jr....:rofl2:

Gogoggansgo 6/19/13 07:19 PM

Small correction to post #1: 2013 & 2014 Brembo Package is available with either transmission, while the 2011 & 2012's were manual trans only.

I consider my '11 Brembo GT to be the perfect example of the breed, as delivered from the factory: Brembo Package, 3.73 gears, and plain Jane 300A model. That was the lightest, best-handling, best-stopping, best accelerating GT in 2011. 0.96 G's on the skidpad, high 12's in the 1/4 mile, and less than 3600 lbs, bone stock. Of course, I've made some changes in the past couple of years, but it's still a raw, muscular, street/strip bruiser.

I don't think that the Brembo GT's are "special editions," but production is less than some so-called special editions. Ford doesn't restrict how many dealers can order, so it isn't a "limited" production offering either. In fact, the dealership I work for has fourteen GT's in stock, half of which have the Brembo Package and/or GT Track Package.

That post was a straight copy and paste from a pre-2013 MY web page, that's why the info is outdated.

I wonder what the numbers are for the 2013/14 Track Package cars and Recaro breakdown. I have this car so it would be nice to know just how special I am. Then break it down by color to narrow it down even more.

2011 Kona blue Mustang GT brembo brake owner here!!! I AM SPECIAL! Why? Well Kona blue is no longer an option, 2011 is the ORIGINAL coyote engine and last but not least... I have brembo stoping power...lol. All in all I love my 5.OH.

The information is a little old, but I appreciate that you took the time to share it. Some of it, I had not run across.

Don't worry about people busting your chops, it is the nature of this beast.

Mustang259 6/20/13 03:13 PM

Thanks for posting the info, I appreciate it, but on a side note. The reason there are so few Brembo pkg cars is that most dealers refused to order that pkg and opted for the 995 wheel upgrade which limited the number of Brembo cars on the lot, hence less sales.

My dealer still refuses to order Brembo pkg/s and still orders the stupid wheel option, which I consider very narrow minded.

Dealer I bought mine from had a BUNCH of Track Pack and Brembo cars, almost all premiums though, and they had a BUNCH of premiums with the $995 19" wheel option too.

You can't seriously believe that?! The GT TP does NOT have Boss heads, cams, crank, rods, oil pan, etc...
