Boss Motorsports vs. American Racing wheels
 

I'm comparing a Boss Motorsports wheel and one from American Racing for my 2011 GT that is on order. One tire dealer tells me that they are the same quality and one tells me AR is better than Boss.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these manufacturers?

Which model of wheel are you referring to? Here in the UK, we've had a number of American Racing wheels (both Razors and Torq Thrust Ms) that have suffered very bad corrosion on the polished lip.

My AR Shelby Razors are fine, touch wood, although mine isn't a daily driver and the wheels are always washed in clean, warm water (no shampoo).

I'd love to see a set of these on an '11 though. Looks like a mid-way design between a Torq Thrust M and a Foose Nitrous :cool:

That's interesting you say that it was the AR's that corroded on the lip, whereas the dealer I spoke with yesterday stated that they had 3 sets of Boss rims returned because the polished lip turned yellow with a year.

I don't live in a salt water environment and the car will be stored in the winter months, but I still want a good quality rim that won't yellow or corrode.

It may be anal, but to ensure you keep the wheels perfect, I'd recommend at least wiping any brake dust off with a wet cloth every day if its a daily driver. Less of a problem if it's a weekend toy :)

American Racing has been in business since the 60's, make very good quality wheels. If you take care of them they will last forever and look good.

If those boss wheels were turning yellow then it is probably the clear coat that had been applied. Clear coated wheels need different care than a regular polished or machine finish wheel. You treat clear coated or painted wheels about the same way you would treat the paint on your car. Mild soap and cold water wash and a good coat of wax.

Keep the brake dust off the wheels, keep them clean and they will last a long time.

That makes sense because the dealer said that the wheel was mostly black except for the rim, and it was the rim that was yellowing.

A fully chromed wheel wouldn't have the same problem, would it?

If they are clear coated then just don't use the acid based wheel cleaning products and they shouldn't turn yellow. If chrome though, I wouldn't imagine they would be coated anyway.

I can tell you that American racing wheels are second to none in quality. I've used them in the past and would hapily use them again any day. They are my first choice for wheels everytime. I can't speak about boss but they do have some nice looking wheels.

I have the A/R Shelby Torq-Thrust wheels and really like the look and the quality.

I would love to see those Boss wheels on somebody's car. Pretty badass looking wheel IMO~

FYI: Boss are made in USA vs. a good majority of American Racing wheels made in China.

Jager I didn't know that..last time I bought a new set from them was back in the early 90's. That's heart breaking.

More and more products are and will be made in china. Companies like American Racing, if they are having their wheels cast there, will dictate the quality control measures that have to be met for their products. So just because they are being manufactured in china is not necessarily telling of the quality.

Now, if you have a philisophical objection to products made in china, that's another story. But soon you will narrow your choices down so far that you may be out of luck...:(
