Sorry if I missed it but has anyone heard anything for the 09 base engine? Will the 4.0L carryover or will Ford switch to the 3.5L cyclone?

Boomer 3/10/06 06:28 AM

No news on anything 09-10 related

It's always a possibility...
Considering how old the Cologne 4.0 is getting up there in age, and the 3.5 is more efficient.

It'd be NICE thats for sure

Since the core design of the Cologne 4.0 dates back to the 2.6 from the 1960s, I award you the understatement of the century.

ScottyBoy302 3/10/06 04:22 PM

Haha, good call. I couldnt imagine them throwing that 4.0 in when theyve got a new one better in every way.

1trickpony 3/10/06 04:50 PM

Unfortunately, I can see one reason to keep the 4.0L: profits. Some bean counter might say Ford can make an extra .5 cents per car by keeping the 4.0L. Otherwise, the new engine is way better and you can even punch out the new engine to 4.0L.

Ford Racing 3/10/06 11:04 PM

I hope that they do run the Duratec in the 09. Those engines are incredible, and would bring the base Mustang up another notch. I have a 2.5 Duratec in my Contour and love it. It's a smooth, world class engine. The 3.5 is supposed to make 250 HP, and would really be an asset to the base stang. I can see Ford running the 4.0 still though, since if the 6 Mustang made 250 HP, it would be too close to an 8 making 300 or just over...

1trickpony 3/10/06 11:46 PM

The 99-04 mustangs only had a 60-70 HP difference (197 versus 260) and I hope the 09s will get a power boost to 320-340 HP. I'm guessing this will leave some room for a 250-260 HP base engine.

I read somewhere they are planning the 3.5 v6 in the 09. but ya know thats just talk.

MSP 3/12/06 09:59 AM

I would like to see the 3.5L as well.. This is basically an engine designed for TurboCharging.. Hence the all forged internals.. So if Ford did sell it in the Mustang, the Performance specialist would be all over it.. Imagine this engine is 250HP N/A.. Add a 14PSI or 18PSI turbo to it, and at 18psi using 15HP per pound of boost, this would be a 520HP V6 Mustang with all forged internals from the factory..

It is imperative Ford makes this move.. Please Ford...

Or Vortech could also make an 18psi kit for it.. I believe the redline of the motor is 6500RPM.. So they could make a standard kit of 12psi, bring the base motor to 430HP with a 12psi pulley.. Then fools like me would order the 18psi pulley and torture all the V8 owners with it.. LOL!!

Even a base 10psi kit for this motor would produce 400HP!!

Here is a pic of the little beast!! Look at those heads!! ooooHHH!!

Sorry, the redline is 6700RPM!!

The crank is forged, but the rods are not.

I'd like to know what the bore spacing is on the D35.

I'd also like to know how they managed to fit a 20 gal gas tank in it too.

1trickpony 3/12/06 02:02 PM

MSP,

This engine, in this configuration, is built for high rpms, not boost. The compression is too high and the pistons are not forged. I would want mid 8s for the CR for a turbo and a forged crank about 6000 rpms. 18 PSI would probably look like July 4 weekend. Ford did mention the engine is designed for other tech like turbos and direct injection. I believe the intent of that comment was future plans and how easy it is to modify the engine from a manufacture's perspective.

I agree this would be a great base engine and love the high redline.

Galaxie 3/12/06 02:17 PM

I'm guessing, the 4.0 will be phased out soon... we'll see

You know, this is a good example of Ford almost half-azzing this brand new engine.. They should just used forged rods, along with a lower compression piston.. Of course, there are reasons why the engine is the way it is.. They cant build a race engine for street use, in a variety of vehicles..

I am sure you could add some boost to the engine 1trickpony.. I dont like the rods though.. But those rods have been safely pushed to 16psi with a proper tune.. LOL! But they should be forged..

We are still not sure Galaxie.. Ford could do something slightly different to the motor for the Ford Mustang V6.. A wish list would go to include Forged rods, and 8.0:1 compression dished pistons..

Thats all we ask Ford.. I know your going to read this.. I have been converted by the 4.0 to a die-hard V6er.. I dont see any V8 Mustangs in my future.. I like climbing the mountain uncertainty.. We V6 Stangers dont ask much.. Dont screw this up.. I'm sure you can somehow manage to slip in some forged rods, and a lower compression ratio with pistons designed for boost applications..

I feel, I am the one who will buy your car.. If you dont listen to me, then who will you listen to.. You need to make subtle changes to the 3.5L V6 to get us on the team once more.. You did a great job on the 4.0.. Now give us 2 things for the 3.5L.. Forged rods, and a lower compression ratio with pistons designed to take severe boost, and high temps.. Do this, and I'll go another round with you in 2009!

@ALL

LOL! If they wont listen to a current V6 owner, then its hopeless.. Who are they going to listen to, a V8 Mustang owner, who wishes V6's didnt exist? AnotherMustangMan 3/13/06 05:46 PM

MSP, the overwhelming majority of V6 buyer aren't performance enthusiasts. I would venture to say 90% of 6 owners wouldn't be able to tell you what "forged internals" are, much less actually want (and be willing to pay for) them.

Of course, that's not to say it wouldn't be awesome if Ford put out a 350Z smacking 6--it just won't happen though as theres no reason for it (remember the GT?)

V10 3/13/06 07:44 PM

MSP, you're way off base.

I'd imagine about 1% of V6 owners put a power booster on their engines. By dropping the compression ratio the 99% of V6 Mustang owners would suffer with lowerperformance and worse fuel economy.

By the way the CR on the 4.0 is 9.8:1, not exactly boost friendly either.

Galaxie 3/14/06 07:55 AM

In the era of cost cutting, I doubt we will see any forged internals on any regular production engine, unless absolutely necessary.

I personally would have paid $1000 more for a forged crank, pistons and H-beam connecting rods.

Ford is not going to build Mustang-specific V6 or V8 with forged internals for enthusiasts to enjoy. If anything, expect to lose content than gain it.

V10 4/11/06 05:27 PM

If you guys didn't see this, someone on BON who claims to be working on the D35 program claims that the D35s are making 265 HP on 87 octane.

If the D35 also makes ~ 260 TQ Ford will really have something.

Hope Ford replaces the 4.0 with the D35 in the Mustang.

1trickpony 4/13/06 02:20 AM

This is on the Ford Media site so I think its legit. Only around 250 TQ through. Not something some gears can't fix.
