5w20 to 5w30
 

I was wondering how many of you have made the switch from the recommended 5w20 weight oil to a 5w30 grade for your 5.0 Coyote?

I made the switch to 5W30 several years ago in my cyclone engine. Granted you asked about the coyote engine but the cyclone also calls for 5W20.

The question is does it tick or engine knock after the switch

Mine hasn't. The 5W20 oil is for the CAFE standards here in the US although its cool too use. The very same Ford engine in Europe as we have here in the US gets recommend 5W 30 oil weight but they don't have CAFE standards.

I'm using 5W30 Amsoil Signature. No tick or knock. 15K miles, or one year oil changes.

Using Amsoil 0W30 Signature with their filters on 15K oil change interval.


65K miles on the clock, no tick, no issues.


Put 200K on my 2005 V6er and it was not using any oil when I traded it in.

I personally run Royal Purple 5W30 in my 2014 GT and love it.

I have no tick, no odd sounds, nothing.

Zero complaints here.

I'm gonna start using them as well. I was watching a video from bob the oil guy that tested an assorted bunch of oil filters including the Mobil 1 extended oil filter.

The Royal Purple and Amsoil filter were basically tired and rated outstanding. They were the best filters.

Sorry if I missed it but are there any benefits of going with 5w30 vs 5w20?

My Coyote calls for 5W-50, but its a bit difficult to find. I'm pondering switching to Mobil1 15W-50 this spring since it's more readily available.

I run Amsoil 10W-30.

Mine calls for 5W-50 as well but I use 5W-40 Royal Purple with a Ford Racing high capacity filter. I have been doing this since my car had 8K miles on it. I have 30K on it now and not a peep. I'm high reving all the time engine braking and accelerating onto the autobahn all the time on the way to the Nurburgring.

I thought you had to go with the recommended oil due to the variable valve timing?

Well, the 5W-20 is not for the variable timing. I read that it was used for meeting emission standards. To preserve your warranty, you need to use a 5W-20 oil that meets Fords specifications, or tell them that you do. :) I've never heard of anyone's warranty being denied because of the oil that they used.

I have a friend that has worked as a Ford teck for many years and he has seen his share of failed motors either from neglect or some other reason. He told me both Toyota and Ford do not accept oil analysis if your motor fails so they have no way of knowing what oil weight you run. They will won't proof that it was changed though. On a side note in the 20 years he has worked as a teck he has never once seen an oil related failure other then neglect like not checking your oil or not changing it within reason.
