Well poop. I guess this means if I place my order in March, I might not see a new 2011 in time for the summer driving months! Good news for Ford though! Given those numbers, I doubt we'll see any special financing or deals on the 2011 for a long time.

Wow. 11,000 in January?
I think the Camaro had 14,000 total pre-orders.

50% were for the V-6. That is interesting....nice to see the V-8 holding a strong ratio (at least for now).

I wonder if the layoff will be posponed or cancelled?

From my understanding the layoffs are due to the lack of Mazda6 sales more than for the Mustang.

If Ford goes through with the layoff (2 shifts to 1, and 35% increase in speed) assuming that the mustang accounts for half of the production:

102,000 / 2 (half mazda) /2 (shift cut) x 1.35 (line increase in speed) thats only 34,425 mustangs a year. :shame:

If they have 11,000 requested, thats gona take 4+ months just for those. That also doesn't account for continous future orders. This throws a huge wrench into my plans. :doh:

Won't be that bad. If they are reducing the shifts, then they were already running well below capacity, and I'd be willing to bet it's not even close to half Mazda (maybe a quarter?). Though I'm just guessing.

Now the question is WHY did they layoff 900 workers? Did they see the 11,000 number and then decide to do it, or did they make the decision say in December based off of 2010 numbers? It might be that they recall some of those workers and add the second shift in.

The other question is, do they expect this trend to continue? Will we see another 10k orders in February, or was it just the rush to get your order in first in January? Only time will answer these questions unfortunately, but speculation sure is fun!

The first article I linked had the Mustang at 2/3rds production, but that was also the older article.

They probably were running below capacity due to the 5.0 on the horision. But now since they cut capacity and demand is back up, its gona take much longer to get the cars that many of us want.

Since the new car is not even available yet, the demand might still go higher for a little while before begining to decline.

The transition from two shifts to one isn't happening until July from what the article that was posted awhile back stated. So won't they still have two shifts next month when production starts?

Hm...I didn't know that. I hope you're right, and they boogy down getting all the early stock and retail orders out the door.

I was trying to remember the 2010 Camaro stats after reading about the Mustang pre-orders to date ... now that you mention it, 14,000 does sound right. If I remember correctly, I think the Camaro order banks opened up in OCTOBER or NOVEMBER and the car officially went on sale in March (or ?? well Spring anyway), so they had 4 or 5 MONTHS to accumulate pre-orders.

2011 Mustang order banks opened up end of January (25th ??) and got to 11,000 in 4 WEEKS time (78.5% of Camaro's 14k). With 3 more weeks left before production starts, I think we have a pretty good shot at exceeding the Camaro's pre-order number even if pre-orders begin to taper off.
