Stop light fun

Alright, I've never really had anyone challenge me before, but tonight I was driving home, and sitting at a stoplight. A late model Camaro SS pulled up next to me, and I took off normally, then he stomped on it and blew past me. At the next light, he was sitting there as I pulled up, and I figured if I got there in time to stop, we'd have a little fun. I got there, and just casually looked over to his wife, who was looking straight ahead. A car pulled out and into my lane, but we sat for long enough to have some room for a little fun. When the light turned green, we both took off, and stayed nose-to-nose until I hit the rev limiter in 2nd. It was a blast. I had to slow down for the car ahead of me anyway, so he took off, them moved over into the left turn lane, and I was turning right at the next light. He was waiting, and when I got to the line, he revved his engine up at me, and I waved at them. They both waved back too, and the wife had a nice big grin on her face. Perhaps I'll meet them again, we'll see. I probably won't leave 2nd that time either, the limit on the roads around here are 45, and I don't want to go too much over that.

nice run, sounds like you had a good time! Always nice to see good sportsmanship too, I hate those ricers that will give you the finger when you smoke them.

Yeah, no young punks involved this time. I'm 40, and I'd guess the wife at least was closer to 45, and he was probably about the same. It was all just for fun, and we both just had fun with it.

But I'll beat him next time!

I was under the impression a new mustang could burn an old camaro with relative ease. Correct me if I'm wrong. Good to see some responsible racing.

Even the late model camaro's/firebirds topped out with 320HP I believe, but they were a tad lighter than the current 'stang. Either way it would be a close race.

Plus he said it was an SS. I ran into one of them this summer versus my stock GT, and he had a good carlength on me by the time we shut down, at around 60 mph.

Interesting thing, I'm 59 and my hair of course is now grey. Well, I never get anybody trying to challenge me at a light. I think they only challenge guys under 45 or so. Of course in my younger days ....... . Have fun, be carefull always.

An 05+ will lose to an 02' SS stock to stock. Those SS's can hit 12's bone stock.

They also had more torque and had it 1000 RPM earlier. An S197 3V stock is no match for an LS1 SS.

The LS1s were underated... they were closer to the actual vette rating of 340-350

Can they hit high 12s stock... ? about as often as an 05 hitting 13.2 stock.
Most times are mid to low 13s
And doesn't mean that most people are capable of even doing that.... driver mod

Agree 100%, I was bout to make a post saying since when do 02 Fbodies hit high 12s stock, but you beat me to it. I mean, I think it is possible, and someone with great driving skills in perfect conditions might have done it ONCE, but its not common.

And to expand on someone elses post up there in a race of equal drivers and stock for stock the SS will beat the 05+ GT, but that doesnt mean it always happens like that on the street.

Stock for stock SS are faster if drivers perform the same. But since i have added bolt-ons i put down SS and C5 vettes without breaking a sweat. From a roll or a light it doesn't matter. C6 from a light if they don't have the above average driver mod. Like the above poster says - streets is a totally different beast than a drag strip.

Well I'll admit I'm not the above average driver, and I'd bet he had intake and exhaust done on his car, which is all I have at the moment. I'll be cruising down Flamingo more often to see if I come across them again for a re-match. ;-)

As for his wife having the hots for me, you obviously haven't seen my picture yet. LOL

Now I've got to do some more work though. Let's see, under drive pullies, a dyno tune, LT headers, etc. I'll be ready for them next time!

I need to start hitting the track with it too, get some practice in.

What are your mods?

I have taken out a LS1 Z28 and a C5 Vette.
