I always thought redfire was a metallic color? I mean... it looks like it's metallic on all the videos and pictures... :\

You may easily remove 'clearcoat', that's just the type of the paint.

Ah. Ok. I wont be taking the paint off anyway. (Guess that means you cant with metallic)

I was also wondering if one held up better than the other...?

I remember once a good auto paint shop guy saying that durable reds are hard to do. Apparently good red pigments cost a lot and manufacturers tend to use cheaper, less durable ones. That's one of my biggest gripes about my Probe is that despite fanatical care, the top surface paint, electric red, has faded and needed some repainting.

Don't know if this is actually true or to what degree, but just relating what I was told. I imagine that in general, its probably less the color per se and much more so the quality of the paint and application.

all Fords(and just about anyone else) is ALL clearcoat. Redfire is a metallic color.

From talking to many probe owners I've found that a common complaint is fading especially with reds going to pink.

So Sonic Blue could fade to Sky Blue? :shock:

Or even worse, windveil... :eek: :worship:

Something like this came up over on a Mazda forum. Mazda, and this goes for the Mazda6 which the Mustang will share a production line with, uses two types of metallic paint. One is a metallic and one is a metallic clearcoat. The difference lies in which layer of paint the metallic "flecks" reside. The former has the flecks in the actual color and the latter has the flecks in the clearcoat.

The way to tell the difference is to open the trunk or a door and find a drip channel that has not been clearcoated. If you see metallic flecks in that channel you have the flecks in the color layer. If not, you have the flecks in the clearcoat.

One thing to think about if you have the flecks in the clearcoat is how you wax/polish/clean the finish. If you use an abrasive polish, or pain cleaner, you risk removing a good bit of the clearcoat thus losing the metallic look.

I now drive a 2004 redfire metallic Mazda6s MT and it does have the flecks in the color layer. I would assume that Ford will use the same paint for the Mustang too since they are built in the same building and it would save them big $$$ in doing so.
