Say GoodBye to Fuel Caps!!!!! (with PICS)
November 14, 2007
To:All Ford and Lincoln Mercury DealersSubject:New Easy Fuel capless fuel filler system launches on 2008 ½ Explorer and MountaineerOverview
2008 Model Year Ford Explorer 4 Door (NA for Sport Trac) and Mercury Mountaineer will be launching Easy FuelTM capless fuel filler system on all vehicles produced after December 2, 2007.
Benefits
The Easy FuelTM capless fuel filler system is another example of innovation from Ford Motor Company. The Mercury Mountaineer and Ford Explorer will be the first mass-produced vehicles in North America to offer this feature that enables customers to fuel their vehicle without opening or closing a traditional fuel cap. Customers will benefit in these primary ways:
The new delivery checklist has been updated to ensure this feature is covered at new vehicle delivery. It is important for customers to be aware that their vehicle no longer needs a fuel cap and understand the benefits of this innovative feature. Additionally, they should be informed about the presence of an included funnel in the vehicle that will allow them to open the system and use a portable gas container should they run out of gas.
A comprehensive presentation that provides a detailed explanation of the Easy FuelTM capless fuel (with photos) has been posted to FMCdealer.com. In addition, on December 1st this content will be available to dealership personnel from the Professional Technician Society home page/Tech Central/New Model Launch.
Summary
Ensure your customers are aware of this new feature that will be standard on all 2008 Model Year Mountaineer and 4 Door Explorers produced this December through the balance of the model year
This Has a Nice PDF with Pics but is Too Darn Big to Post!

Customers will benefit in these primary ways:
- Faster and easier fill ups – No cap to unscrew or attach will simplify and speed up trips to the pump
- Clean Hands – Without the need to remove or replace the gas cap, customers reduce the chances of having the smell of gas on their hands when filling up
- Consistent Seal – Customers are not responsible for sealing the system which will ensure the system is always sealed. The less time the fuel filler is open, the fewer gasoline fumes are released into the environment
- No lost gas caps – Without a cap to leave behind, customers can be sure to always have a seal for their fuel system without worrying about a gas cap

Bah That's nothing I had a "capless fuel system" on my 77Cobra back in the 80's. Then when I found the clown that stole the cap, he had a "toothless eating system" when i got done with him.

Here ya go
Pic1: The Cap ...duh
Pic2: Shot of the nozzel in the filler cap
Pic3: Shows the springs and the release levers being pushed to release the latch/seal on the tank and allows the door to swing open for the nozel to enter
Pic4: showing the door will not open if those 2 releases aren't pushed with a proper filler nozel (hence why you can't just fill the tank up with anything)
Pic5: Location of the funnel for filling without a gas pump
Pic6: Using the funnel
Pic7: Yes...there is a locking plug for the filler (accessory)

The more complicated the plumbing the easier it is to plug the drain!
I guess a light on the dash was not enough to let us know our cap was loose. Now we are not responsible enough to replace our own gas cap!

Seriously, I like the idea and hope it works reliably in the real world, given some of the fueling issues the S197's had with a conventional cap. Just wouldn't want to be SOL if something should mess up the works...

I think the first "better idea" they should be working on is a tank we can actually fill.
