friend's boyfriend bought a '69 Galaxie
 

so i drove my friend up to martinez today, to look at a '69 galaxie 500. I told him I wouldn;t drive him home :grin: So he had to buy it.

302, AT, torn seats, some bodywork needed, no real rust, original AZ car. this thing is huge btw, even for a two door. and for $500 a freaking steal!!!

So what are owner's plans? Restoration?

Mechanically, he doesn't have any big plans as of yet. surprisingly, the 302 gets it moving pretty well. it took us around 7 or 8 seconds to get to 60... which is freaking ridiculous for a car that large.

I know he wants to paint it black, and I'll definitely be helping him do that in the near future. there are a few little odds and ends that need replacing. a small dent here, a missing trim piece there. just what you'd expect with a car like this. The one rust spot was coated with foam about 6 years ago and hasnt expanded since. Like it says, originally in AZ and it was in a much drier region of CA than we've been in. Needs cleaning and freshening up is all.

We just went cruising through the mountains to see how it handled curves and night. Only issues were starting it up in the cold. He wasn't used to warming up a car, and since I haven't driven the II in the cold for a while, i forgot how long it takes lol

Looks really solid. What a great buy! You definitely don't find cars like that here in the Northeast that often.

By the way, I still love that II of yours. You've really done a lot with it. Please hold on to that car. :)

We are going to paint the car ourselves, it has been decided. The next weekend I come home I'm going straight to Brian's and we're gonna start sanding on a friday, start priming early satuday and maybe get in a first coat of the rustoleum paint. We're going to do it with rollers, like my other friend and i did on his horse trailer. it came out great.

Wow, that car brings back some memories.
I took my girl to our senior prom in my Dad's "fire engine red" Galaxie.
Spent an entire week polishing and waxing.
My arms hurt just thinking about it.
But.... (drumroll please)
the back seat was huge! :grin:

Yeah there is a post on another forum about the roller paint job. All of the cars the people did turned out real nice.

yea that thread is way old, i remember reading about that stuff quite a while ago

he uses standard rustoleum paint and adds an activator, then rolls it on a layer at a time

takes around 7-8 coats i think before it comes out real nice

That's pretty interesting, I like the galaxies, and yeah, they are pretty quick for something that heavy.

We went to the junkyard saturday, looking for anything nifty, and lo and behold, we picked up an Eaton M90.

We're gonna fab this thing up somehow, and then I'm going to finally get on the ball and do the same to the II. I figure I'll be able to actually motivate myself to do it if its for a friend, and then once i do that, almost all the work is done for mine :P the only real differences between the two setups will be the blower unit itself. Brian needs to change the pulleys in his to make it work, and both cars need adapter plates and relocation of the acessories.

Sanded down the car some, and primered the areas where I sanded too deep and got to bare metal. We're going to be painting right over the old paint using the method that the guy with the charger used, so we're not going to primer the whole car.

Me too :P If I had pics of that trailer we did, I would upload them, but I don't.

PS this thing is ludicrously large. I had to move it around in the driveway to get to a better spot bec brian failed at parking. The steering is soooooo easy, and it took so many turns. When people call this car a boat, they are NOT kidding. You know the part in Titanic where they try and swerve to avoid the iceberg and they turn the helm like crazy and barely turn at all... that was me this morning lol

Yeah, those cars are incredibly large! There's like a 20 body trunk out back, I swear. You'll find out even more how big it is when you go to paint it.
