That would be ideal, if it makes it to production. Many current hybrid owners have been tinkering with this technology and some have made it work, getting upwards of 80mpg.

yup, excellent news. Ford should take the lead on this one. They were the first to accept the idea of customers tinkering with their Escapes, while Toyota was at first ****ed off at what people were doing with their Priuses, i guess for warranty or liability issues.

PHEVs are the perfect gradual stepping stone towards eventually making a PHEV that has no gas engine at all, therefore making it a completely electric vehicle. But we stick with PHEVs until the electric side of things gradually becomes good enough to take on the job all by itself. Now if you'll excuse me, i've got a PHEV to go work on in the basement.
