Ford can't perfect an aluminum hood - I feel sorry for new F150 owners

I can't wait to hear what happens with these new aluminum body F150's.

If Ford can't get the corrosion on the hood of a mustang right over the last 10 years or so, what are they going to do with the complete aluminum truck.

(sitting back with popcorn and a beer to watch this unfold)

I'm waiting to see how the paint holds up too. I really believe if the F150 does good, the 2020 Mustang (refresh) will have an all aluminum body that will give it the 'weight loss' the 2015 was supposed to have had

I'm going on the record and say "The all aluminum body 2020 Mustang will have the weight loss the 2015 was rumored to have had.

it depends on how they prep the base metal prior to applying the finish coat ..my company has produced space flight hardware for 40 years and almost all had been made of painted aluminum which goes thru rigorous adhesion testing ..we chip the paint on purpose and see if it will release ..we acid dip it .. we salt water soak it ..we bend test panels double .. if they don't apply some kind of electrostatic adhesion plating to it the yes it will fail ...

Ford can't perfect an aluminum hood - I feel sorry for new F150 owners

I am victim of the aluminum hood bubbling on our 2012 Mustang convertible. Ford won't cover it because the car is "out of warranty"... What a load of crap. 10,ooo km's on it and bubbling across the hood.

apparently is doesn't fall under the "corrosion warranty"... What the hell do you call it then? Bubbles in metal of any type is corrosion.

I CAN'T WAIT so see these people that spend $40-50K on their new aluminum F150 to have it bubble up in the next few years and Ford say "sorry, it's out of warranty"

(feet on the footstool, popcorn on my lap and a beer on the table -- I'm going to sit back and watch this fight)

any reason you need to post multiple thread on the same topic?

maybe it would be a good idea to start a new trend in cars, I wounder who will be the first one to offer anodized or brushed aluminum finish cars. A black anodized brushed aluminum car would be amazing.

That would be incredibly expensive, but would be a decent finish. Hard coat anodizing would be fairly durable, although it will never look as good as paint, and even the smallest scratch would mean anodizing the entire panel as a fix.

That's my plan if I ever get a new F-150. Can I order it with the "paint delete" option so I can have it painted correctly myself?

I heard that being talked about years ago. they said it would cost to much and be to hard to fix. That's why Lexus was playing with the colored plastic panels that were the same color all the way though.

I'm willing to bet plastic body panels will be the future. Who knows what sort of plastics will be available in 20 years, they might be just as strong as steel, or able to be reinforced in some way to make them durable in crashes.

Corvette and Saturns have been using plastic panels for the past 15+ years...

Old tech. My 91 & 94 Saturn's had them. No dings or dents from grocery carts. Paint held up great.

No, your Saturn used SOME plastic panels.

I'm talking about the entire exterior of the vehicle being plastic. Easy to remove plastic panels that either don't require paint, and/or can be easily removed to be painted.

And bumpers. Only the hood/decklid/structure were metal.

I suppose Joey is considering the structure to be plastic too...the i3 and i8 are aiming to bring carbon reinforced plastic a reality for mass produced vehicles. "Plastic" structures for mainstream cars and trucks are right around the corner...
